Dior Has Given Their Fashion Homage To Princess Diana, The ‘Lady Dior’, A Royal Upgrade

A legacy brand’s reinvention of a classic gets a regal makeover.

When the formidable fashion queen Diana, Princess of Wales, was gifted a brand new unnamed Christian Dior bag in 1995, it was the start of a beautiful love affair.

The beloved accessory became her signature carrier and was eventually named in her honour: the Lady Dior.

Now, creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri has reinterpreted the quilted classic, updating with a horizontal shape, fresh colourways and fabrications, and a new name, the ‘Lady D-Joy’. Long may it reign.

For the unacquainted, back in September 1995, the late Princess attended the opening of the Paul Cézanne retrospective at the Grand Palais in Paris. It was there that she was offered the latest Dior bag, which was yet to have been marketed, or even named.

Of course, this accessory fast became one of Lady Diana’s must-haves and was spotted in nearly all of her outings, turning a twist of fate into a legend.

The Lady D-Joy boasts architectural lines that are enhanced with two leather and chain straps. A part of the Dior Fall 2022 collection, this emblematic piece is available in four colour ways—yellow, coral, natural and cerulean blue leather.

Dior’s ode to Diana is also “transposed into ultra-contemporary and exclusive variations, adorned with sequin embroideries”, as per the French fashion house.

The accessory itself boasts Dior’s signature cannage motif and comes in two denim models, one with metallic eyelets and the other with a tie-dye effect for a daring look.

The Lady D-Joy is the result of “virtuoso craftsmanship perpetuated in Dior’s Italian ateliers”, and made from calfskin leather that has been meticulously cut for the different components that are then embellished with the Diamond cannage motif.

Then, the accessory is assembled on a wooden mould to match the proportions of the bag and finally, the straps and details—such as the essential lucky charms—complete the accessory. One look at the Lady D-Joy, and it’s easy to see how it’s the perfect fit for a royal.

You can get yourself Dior’s new Lady D-Joy bag in the above colourways now at the Dior website.
