If one key trend was to come out of 2022, it was the collective desire to own a designer handbag. Chalk it up to the power of the internet, the influence of key celebrities and the consistent hold luxury fashion houses continue to have, but something was undoubtedly in the air.
You couldn’t walk down the street without spying a Dior Saddlebag or Prada Cleo Shoulder Bag strapped to the arm of someone, and it only increased the collective lust of tapping into the designer brand world.
Luckily, along with the rise in designer bag purchases, came the rise of third party retailers offering them at a reduced price. Of course, there’s a certain prestige that comes with owning a handbag with an identifiable logo, but for those of us who can’t afford to pay full retail price, buying them second-hand or off-season has provided a rare opportunity to tap into an otherwise exclusive market (which we love).
So, now that 2022 is almost behind us, we’re already thinking about the designer handbag trends set to dominate 2023. For industry insight, we leaned on three notable retailers to give us the intel on what they predict to take off. Below, find out what they are.
Colourful creations
“Our trend predictions include COLOURS both pastel and bright, continuing as a trend through the new year. We believe colours including pale greens, baby pinks and purples featured throughout brands such as Jacquemus and Bottega Veneta will be seen a lot.” — Cosette.
Iconic Top Handle, $3,390, from Ferragamo
Aphrodite Small Shoulder Bag, $2,680 from Gucci
Turquoise Nappa Leather Bag, $4,800 from Fendi
Roman Stud Bag with Rhinestones, $9000 from Valentino
Quirky styles
“We predict to see puffer bags in the New Year — the contrast between the texture of a pillow-like bag paired with a structured suit.” — Cosette.
“Textured and quirky bags will also be making an impact. It’s all about a bag being instagrammable on and off the runway, and this style allows for just that, in addition to embellished, sparkly, silver or beaded party bags to add some bling to your outfit. Unconventional materials and textures will also be hot property, such as the denim bag and baguette style.” — Nicole Adolfe, THE ICONIC.
“Aided by Glenn Martens’ appointment at Diesel and the craze for denim it has sparked, we’ve seen denim bag demand rising via sales of long-loved 00s designer styles, followed on by many iterations across the SS23 season – notably Diesel [of course], KNWLS and Blumarine among countless others.” — Farfetch.
Shearling Chain Shoulder Bag, $5,900 from Celine
Satin Mini-Bag With Crystals, $3,500 from Prada
Candy Padded Tech Cassette, $1,570 from Bottega Veneta
Polished pieces
“There is a mood in the air for a slightly more buttoned-up, polished aesthetic, and with this comes a nostalgia for classic, ladylike bags. Case in point, Maximilian Davis’ reissue of Salvatore Ferragamo’s classic Wanda bag, in three shapes and sizes including the original buffed black with gold clasps, complemented by multiple new colourways and finishes [including full coverage red Swarovski crystals].” — Farfetch
“Structural bags with boxy top handles and rectangular shapes will be making an impact.” — Nicole Adolfe, THE ICONIC.
“We believe we will see a rise in top handle bags, the boxy structured ‘work’ style bags.” — Cosette
Top Handle Bag Panthère de Cartier, $3,800 from Cartier
Medium Lady Dior Bag, $8,500 from Dior
Aphrodite medium shoulder bag in black, $3,200, from Gucci
Mini and shoulder bags
“The short-strapped shoulder bag is having a moment – small and compact, and perfect for tucking under the arm. This nostalgic style seen at Dion Lee, Miu Miu and Courrèges transitions easily between day and night, bringing a little something to a t-shirt and jeans moment, but working equally well after hours for dinner. Notably also appropriately-sized for hands-free dance floor situation.” — Farfetch
“The timeless mini bag will remain in high demand, but not as small as previous seasons. These styles will be a smaller version of the classic shoulder bag, making them more of an everyday item that you can wear as a statement piece to any occasion.” — Nicole Adolfe, THE ICONIC.
Mini Pochette Accessories, $1,080 from Louis Vuitton
Luna Shoulder Bag, $575 from Coach
Le 5 à 7 Hobo Bag, $3,330 from Saint Laurent

Le 5 à 7 mini hobo in smooth leather, $1,690, from Saint Laurent
Pre-loved domination
“With consumers actively trying to become more conscious of their purchasing habits and where it’s come from, I think we will be seeing pre-loved designer bags gain popularity in 2023. It’s a smart and circular way to own a luxury designer bag for a fraction of the price.” — Nicole Adolfe, THE ICONIC.
