Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s multiple weddings were arguably the most memorable marks of love of the past year. With a wedding ceremony in both India and the United States, plus a total of three receptions, the lavish festivities garnered a fair bit of attention and celebrated their love in a very public way. In other words, everyone knew when they were married.
Now, speaking with InStyle US the actress revealed that not everyone has been as supportive of their relationship, citing backlash they have received over their difference in age — Chopra is 36 and her husband 26. “People gave us a lot of shit about that and still do,” she said in discussing the criticism they have faced as a couple. She goes on to point out the double standard of people discussing their 10 year age gap, “I find it really amazing when you flip it and the guy is older, no one cares and actually people like it.”
Their age gap isn’t the only thing surrounding the couple to have garnered discussion, with a now removed opinion piece calling their relationship fraudulent which was quickly hit with widespread public backlash calling sexism and xenophobia. Always focusing on the positive, Chopra chose to remain calm throughout the uproar, saying “Commenting on some stupidity means it eventually becomes important because I gave it importance,” Her reasoning for taking the moral high ground is just as considered: “A lot of people don’t understand that way of thinking. It’s not a myopic thought … it’s a long-term plan.”

Long-term plans seem to be Chopra’s current focus, with the development of a reality show based on Indian style wedding rehearsals underway as well as an all South-Asian cast romantic comedy she pitched to Mindy Kaling, who will write the film.
These big projects are just the beginning for Chopra, who shared her ultimate goal. “I want my existence to have meant something. I want my kids to turn around and be like, ‘Yeah, that was my mom.'”
