Ever since news of Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth’s split broke, speculation has mounted as to why the longtime couple decided to call it quits. Now, Cyrus’ latest song could give fans all the answers.
The 26-year-old songwriter released a new song titled ‘Slide Away’ in which she directly references her recent split with Hemsworth.
Some of the lyrics are:
Once upon it was paradise, once upon a time I was paralyzed / I think I’m gonna miss these harbor lights / But it’s time to let it go.
Once upon a time it was made for us, woke up one day and it turned to dust. Baby, we were found, but now we’re lost / So it’s time to let it go.
You can listen to some of the song below.
Cyrus then goes on to reference drugs and alcohol:
I want my house in the hills / don’t want the whisky and pills / I don’t give up easily but I don’t think I’m down.
Move on, we’re not 17 / I’m not who I used to be,” Cyrus adds. “You said that everything changed / You’re right I’m grown now.
In the days following the couple’s split, Miley has been photographed on a girl’s trip with Kaitlynn Carter, Brody Jenner’s ex-wife who she was spotted kissing, while Liam is spending family time in Byron Bay, prompting speculation that the singer wasn’t ready to settle down. But according to friends of the pair, it was actually Liam’s behaviour that was a major factor in the marriage breakdown.
“Everyone always thinks Miley is problematic and immature and a hardcore partier while he’s this chill surfer dude, but that’s actually [not accurate],” a source told PEOPLE. “Liam parties with his friends, and Miley thinks he should’ve grown out of that by now.”
Another source agreed that Liam’s personality is very different to the “super easygoing” image the public sees, elaborated saying that the 29-year-old can get “moody” and “lash out” at Miley.
“She’s been supportive of him when things get dark, but it’s tough,” they told PEOPLE. “That’s something that has weighed on Miley and their relationship. He can also lash out at her, and he hates the attention their ups and downs bring.”
Another friend said that while Liam supported Miley in her career and loves that she is her own independent person, he also struggled with their unconventional marriage. “There’s a bit of him who wants a housewife,” the source said. “He loves that she has her own career and focus, but he also wants a wife who cooks and would stay home with the kids.”
Last month, Miley opened up about her ‘unique’ marriage to ELLE USA saying, “do people really think that I’m at home in a fucking apron cooking dinner?”
“I think it’s very confusing to people that I’m married. But my relationship is unique. And I don’t know that I would ever publicly allow people in there because it’s so complex, and modern, and new that I don’t think we’re in a place where people would get it. I mean, do people really think that I’m at home in a fucking apron cooking dinner? I’m in a hetero relationship, but I still am very sexually attracted to women,” she said at the time. “People become vegetarian for health reasons, but bacon is still fucking good, and I know that. I made a partner decision. This is the person I feel has my back the most. I definitely don’t fit into a stereotypical wife role. I don’t even like that word.”
As for Miley’s new relationship? A further source told People that Miley’s ‘fling’ with Kaitlynn is her trying “to push Liam’s buttons, whether she’ll admit it or not,” but that it’s because she’s “hurt.”
