Ever since Meghan Markle joined the Royal Family, rumours have plagued her relationship with sister-in-law Kate Middleton. It came to a head just before Meghan’s wedding to Prince Harry in 2018 when reports surfaced that the soon-to-be in-law’s shared a stressful moment – leaving Kate in “tears”.
The incident allegedly took place when Kate brought Princess Charlotte to her dress fitting before the big nuptials. According to The Telegraph, Kate “left in tears” afterwards over an argument about what the young royal would be wearing to the event. A source at the time said, Kate “had only just given birth to Prince Louis and was feeling quite emotional.”
Now, new reports have claimed to have uncovered the reason behind that one defining moment. In a new Tatler profile on Kate Middleton, one royal insider says that the moment unfolded at Harry and Meghan’s wedding rehearsal and had to do with whether or not the young bridesmaids would wear tights.
“Then there was an incident at the wedding rehearsal,” a source told the outlet. “It was a hot day, and apparently there was a row over whether the bridesmaids should wear tights or not. Kate, following protocol, felt that they should. Meghan didn’t want them to.”
For the Royal Family, tights are a common occurrence for women. Looking back at photos of past royal weddings, tights are always worn by bridesmaids (and even guests). At the wedding of Prince William and Kate her bridesmaids wore them, as was the same at the weddings of her sister, Pippa Middleton, and Princess Eugenie.
While the pair have seemingly made it through that rough patch, it was recently revealed that Meghan feels if Kate were to have received the same negative treatment from the media that changes would have been made in royal policy.
As reported in the Daily Mail, Meghan reportedly told friends that if Kate had been criticised as badly as she was, the Royal Family would have stepped in and “changes would have been made.” According to the source, “[Meghan said] no one would have put up with it, and the broken and outdated system would have been revised. Those outlets responsible for their vicious attacks would have been shut out.”
This disparity is apparently what “irritated Meghan and Harry the most”: That if the press had “constantly criticised and needlessly bashed Kate the way they did her, changes within the royal’s media policy would have been made. No questions asked.”
“Harry went to his father Prince Charles and his grandmother the Queen ‘constantly’ about Meghan being bullied,” the outlet says, “but they ‘wouldn’t do anything to change the protocol,’ despite seeing ‘how it was tearing him apart,’ according to the source.”
“Meghan said they made it seem like this is the way it is, deal with it. Harry had been dealing with it far too long. She said he wasn’t going to let this destroy her life and their marriage.” Apparently she also said the whole thing was “infuriating.”
