Jennifer Lopez has taken to her Instagram to introduce a new short film that is close to her heart.
The film, Draw With Me, hopes to shed light on the experiences of a young transgender person, and the struggles of coming out to their family.
Introducing a clip from the film, Lopez went on to explain why it is so important to discuss and understand the trans experience.
“Draw With Me is a short film about a transgender youth and their journey of coming out to their family and also engaging in their art to help them cope with the feelings they were having during this time,” Lopez explained in the video.
“The film is important and timely in its story and message and can have a huge impact on those of us who watch and experience what Brendon and their family is going through in this time of acceptance and admission.”
Her support for the project is particularly important, as the musician called it “a story that’s very close to my heart because it was a family affair. It’s about accepting change and challenges with love and knowing that when we do, anything’s possible. Also because, Brendon is my nibling.”
The word ‘nibling’ is a gender-neutral term that is used to refer to a child of one’s sibling, as a replacement for ‘niece’ or ‘nephew’.
In the clip from Draw With Me, Brendon explains, “It was in eighth grade when I finally felt comfortable with saying that I’m trans.”
The full film is set to debut at film festivals around the world and via video on demand soon.
