Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, this weekend saw the most talked-about romance of this century reach new heights—Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck announced that they’re engaged.
Not long after the couple sparked engagement rumours, Lopez took to her social media accounts to tease a “major announcement” that would be announced on her website, OnTheJLo, but only for those who subscribed to her newsletter.
“So I have a really exciting story to share. So if you’re not part of my inner circle, you have to go to onthejlo.com to hear this one,” she said in a video.
“I don’t know if you guys know what that is, but it is my inner circle where I share my more personal things, and this one’s definitely On The JLo.”
Confirming the news to People, those subscribed to Lopez’s website were sent a new video of the musician gazing down at a large, green engagement ring on her finger with tears in her eyes. While no details around the engagement ring have been confirmed, the diamond’s light colour has left jewellery connoisseurs wondering if it was in fact a green diamond, rather than an emerald.
While most of us have just been admiring the ring in all of its magnificence, fans of JLo made it known that the colour of the diamond held more meaning to her than we originally thought. According to People, Lopez has previously opened up about the emotional connection that she has with the colour green, in a previous newsletter.
“I always say the colour green is my lucky colour,” Lopez wrote. Then, in reference to her iconic green Versace dress from the 2000 Grammy Awards, she added, “maybe you can remember a certain green dress”.
She continued, “I’ve realised there are many moments in my life where amazing things happened when I was wearing green.”
As we know, this isn’t the first time that Lopez and Affleck have been set to walk down the aisle, nor with an unconventional ring. Back in 2002, Affleck proposed to the Marry Me star with a 6.1-carat pink diamond ring, that was worth an estimated USD $2.5 million (approximately AUD $3.3 million). But of course, the pair called an end to their engagement when officially splitting up in 2004.
Twenty years later, and engaged again, the pair have no plans to put an end to their romance. In an interview with Rolling Stone back in February 2022, Lopez thinks this time around will be different.
“I don’t think we would have got back together if we thought that was where it was headed,” she told the publication.
“We feel like what we found again is so much more important, and how we protect that and how we live our lives—what to share, what not to share—is the balance that we have now, the benefit of experience and the wisdom that we gained over the years.”
Either way, it’s safe to say that we’re over the moon for the happy couple.
