While sexism certainly ran rampant on the hugely popular television drama Game Of Thrones, there seemed to be an array of sexist encounters on the set of the series too.
Recently revealing her experiences with on-set sexist comments, Nathalie Emmanuel spoke up about how Emilia Clarke defended her when another co-star made a comment about Emmanuel’s “revealing” costume.
We first met Emmanuel in season three of the series, playing Missandei, the devoted friend of Clarke’s character, Daenerys Targaryen.
In real life, the pair have become friends with Emmanuel stating that they “always looked out for each other” as they were “the only girls on a male-dominated set”.
“In my first season, my costume was pretty revealing, and there was an incident with a supporting actor who made a comment about it on set–I mean, typical—and Emilia straightaway had my back,” Emmanuel told Vogue. “It got handled.”
However, this isn’t the first time that rumours about Game Of Thrones‘ on-set sexism were confirmed.
In November 2019, Emilia Clarke appeared on Dax Shepard’s podcast Armchair Expert. On the show, the actress opened up about how daunting it was to film certain scenes on the show, revealing that she would often be in tears before shooting “terrifying” nude scenes.
She told Shepard: “I’ve had fights on set before where I’m like, ‘No, the sheet stays up’, and they’re like, ‘You don’t want to disappoint your Game of Thrones fans’. And I’m like, ‘F*ck you.'”
The star then revealed that she would cry in the bathroom before particular scenes, recalling saying to herself:
“Whatever I’m feeling is wrong, I’m gonna cry in the bathroom and then I’m gonna come back and we’re gonna do the scene and it’s gonna be completely fine”.
