Charlize Theron usually stays pretty hush-hush when it comes to her personal life, but in a rare interview the actress has put to bed a rumour that circulated about her relationship with actor Sean Penn, stating they were never planning to tie the knot.
During an interview on The Howard Stern Show this week, Theron was asked about rumours sheโd once been engaged to Penn, to which she replied, โWhat? Thatโs not true. No. I did not โalmost get married to Seanโ, thatโs such bullshit. No, we dated, that was literally all we did, we dated.โ
She continued, โIt was a relationship, for sure. We were definitely exclusive, but it was for barely a year. We never moved in. I was never going to marry him. It was nothing like that.โ
โI never wanted to get married. Thatโs never been something thatโs important to me,โ she added.

Theron and Penn reportedly began their relationship in 2013, before calling it quits in 2015. In that same year, Theron told Esquire that she and Penn had been friends for 20 years: โI think our friendship stemmed from mutual respect โ more on my end because I really didnโt have a body of work twenty years ago, but my love and passion for making films โ that was our common ground. And also, Sean liked to have conversations outside of just making movies. Thatโs sometimes hard to find among friends here, and thatโs where our friendship really blossomed.โ
She continued, โI enjoy being set up on dates but I donโt know if Iโll ever be able to live with somebody again. To be totally frank, they might have to buy the house next to me. I donโt know if Iโm going to be able to deal with that ever again, Iโm too old for that shit.โ
In 2019, Theron admitted that she wanted someone to โgrow a pair and step upโ to asking her out on a date.
โIโve been single for 10 years. Itโs not a long shot. Somebody just needs to grow a pair and step up,โ the actress told Entertainment Tonight at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. โIโm shockingly available.โ
