While nude scenes feel commonplace in Hollywood, it doesn’t always mean actors are comfortable with doing them, especially retrospectively.
Amanda Seyfried has taken a look back at some of her career-defining moments, revealing her deep regret about filming a naked movie scene at age 19.
“Being 19, walking around without my underwear on – like, are you kidding me? How did I let that happen?” Seyfried said in an interview with Porter.
“Oh, I know why: I was 19 and I didn’t want to upset anybody, and I wanted to keep my job. That’s why.”
While she didn’t name the movie explicitly, it’s widely known that the actress started her career in soap operas, appearing on As the World Turns and All My Children in the early 2000s. She was 18-years-old when she starred in Mean Girls in 2004.
In 2010, Seyfried spoke about watching her series Big Love with her parents and being “horrified” by her own sex scenes.
“I was sitting there watching and all of a sudden, it cut to a scene where two people are having sex, and it’s me! Having sex! I just thought, ‘No, no, no!’” she told The Telegraph.
Despite feeling this pressure, Seyfried says she feels ‘pretty unscathed’ for someone who came of age in 2000s Hollywood, and even less so now as a 36-year-old woman who feels confident in who she is.
“There’s a respect level that I have never felt so fully around me,” she explained to the publication.
“It has nothing to do with any level of fame or recognition or critical acclaim. Whatever it is, it’s not because of Mank, it’s not because of The Dropout, it’s not about having seen my movies. I’m respected because I’m 36 years old and I know who the f–k I am.”
Looking back, Seyfried admits there were so many times she didn’t speak up because she didn’t want to trouble anyone. The most infamous case? Her see-through dress at the Mean Girls premiere, which, when photographed under the bright lights of the red carpet cameras, exposed her bra and underwear.
When asked why the movie studio didn’t help coordinate “something to wear,” Seyfried said, “I slipped through the cracks because I didn’t ever ask for anything, because I thought I was in the way, which is not the way I want to raise my daughter, for sure. … But people liked me because I was easy.”
Now, Seyfried lives with her husband Thomas Sadoski, and two children Nina (5) and Thomas (2) on a farm in Hudson County, New York. They only travel to Los Angeles when necessary, putting both some physical and emotional distance between the difficulties that Hollywood can bring.
