Sometimes a fashion moment is so iconic, you’re morally obliged to replicate it.
Better yet, when you’re the child of a celebrity, there’s every temptation to rifle through your famous parents’ closets—and occasionally take your own modern-day version of one of their most iconic outfits for a spin.
Take, for example, Lily-Rose Depp emulating the effortless French style of her mother, singer Vanessa Paradis, or Elizabeth Hurley’s son, Damien Hurley, paying homage to the Versace safety-pin dress that catapulted his mother to stardom.
Model-of-the-moment Kaia Gerber arguably took the cake when she attended her 18th birthday party in September 2019 wearing a Versace dress almost identical to one her mother, Cindy Crawford, made famous in the early ’90s.
But the latest celebrity child to rework one of their parent’s iconic outfits was none other Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter Apple Martin, who tried on one of her mother’s famous dresses.
Below, Apple’s take on her mother’s classic look and every other time a famous child replicated one of their parents’ most iconic looks.
Apple Martin and Gwenyth Paltrow
Gwyneth Paltrow took to Instagram to share a cute picture of her daughter, Apple Martin, trying on Paltrow’s Alexander McQueen dress. Paltrow famously wore the dress, which features a sheer bodice and long black skirt, to the Oscars in 2002.
Valentina Paloma Pinault and Salma Hayek
Salma Hayek attended the 95th Annual Academy Awards with her 15-year-old daughter Valentina Paloma Pinault, who was given the chance to wear something special of her mum’s. The teenager stunned in the now vintage Isaac Mizrahi gown her mum wore to the Fire and Ice Ball in 1997. In contrast to the thick choker necklace pairing her mum wore with the dress in the 90s, Pinault opted for a thinner silver necklace and Gucci Jackie 1961 bag.
With Hayek in a glittering amber coloured gown, the mother-daughter duo were a vision in red.
Leni Klum and Heidi Klum
At only 18-years-old, it seems that Heidi Klum’s daughter Leni is only now just starting to realise the benefits of having a supermodel for a mother. Case in point: Leni’s prom dress.
The emerging model borrowed Klum’s strapless slip, one that she wore to a 1998 Comic Relief event, for her prom night. Leni posted the dress to social media with the simple caption “prom night in mamas dress”.
Zahara Jolie-Pitt and Angelina Jolie
Rather than let her rack of red carpet-ready gowns collect dust in storage, Angelina Jolie decided to let her daughter’s sport her once-iconic looks. This time, the honour fell upon Jolie’s daughter, Zahara Jolie-Pitt, while attending the premiere of her mother’s latest film, Marvel’s Eternals. The 16-year-old stunned in her mother’s 2014 gold Elie Saab Couture gown that she wore to the Academy Awards.
Shiloh Jolie-Pitt and Angelina Jolie
Another of Jolie’s daughters, Shiloh, also looks to have made a trip to her mother’s wardrobe, after appearing at an Eternals red carpet event in her mother’s black-and-white Dior gown that she wore on her 2019 press tour for Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil. But rather than simply rewear her former ensemble, the garment looks to have been altered to suit the 15-year-old, simply by lifting the hem to sit above the knee and by using the excess fabric to secure shoulder straps.
Rowan Francis Henchy and Brooke Shields
Brooke Shields’ daughter made her mum very proud when she decided to wear her iconic 1998 Golden Globes dress to her prom. “I thought it was a special night when I was nominated for a Golden Globe and wore this dress in 1998, but nothing could have prepared me to see my daughter wearing it to her prom ❤️ proud mama!” Brooke wrote on Instagram.
Kaia Gerber and Cindy Crawford
For her 18th birthday party in September 2019, Gerber wore a re-vamped version of the iconic Gianni Versace leather dress that her mother, Cindy Crawford, wore to the MTV VMAs in 1992 (paired with equally huge hair, no less).
Charlotte Casiraghi and Princess Caroline
For her star-studded wedding in June 2019, Monaco royal Charlotte Casiraghi wore a lace Giambattista Valli gown inspired by her mother, Caroline, Princess of Hanover’s wedding dress.
Damien Hurley and Elizabeth Hurley
For a Pat McGrath event in 2019, Elizabeth Hurley’s lookalike son wore a safety-pin-adorned black suit by Versace, which was reminiscent of the revealing Versace gown that shot his mother to worldwide fame in the mid-’90s.
Georgia May Jagger and Jerry Hall
Jagger has made a habit of wearing outfits worn first by her supermodel mother, Jerry Hall—here she is in 2011 wearing a body-con LBD similar to one her mother wore in 2000.

Black-ish actress Tracee Ellis Ross is arguably almost as much of a fashion icon as her famous mother, Diana Ross. In 2017, Ellis Ross directly channelled her mother’s vibrant style with this sequinned Moschino gown, which was inspired by one of her mother’s performance dresses from the 1980s.
Lourdes Leon and Madonna
For an event in November 2018, Madonna’s 22-year-old daughter Lourdes Leon channelled one of her mother’s most iconic looks—a modern-day variation of Madonna’s famous white tulle ‘wedding dress’, which she wore to the 1984 MTV VMAs.
Queen Letizia and Queen Sofia of Spain
