From ballgowns and beanies to questionable leather jumpsuits

While Hollywood’s biggest names in fashion have the help of expert stylists and access to the most luxurious fashion houses, sometimes even they’re prone to a fashion faux pas.

Considering how quickly trends come and go, many celebs have admitted that while their red carpet looks may have been in style at the time, looking back can bring a serious cringe-factor. After all, low-rise jeans were once considered an acceptable choice for major award ceremonies.

And unlike us who have the ability to delete a regretful sartorial snap from our feeds at any given moment, celebrities have theirs plastered online to revisit year after year.

Below, everyone from Sophie Turner to Eva Longoria shares the red carpet outfit they regret.

Miley Cyrus

It’d be hard to pinpoint a Miley Cyrus outfit that isn’t somewhat controversial, but there’s one in particular that the singer has admitted she regrets. In an interview with marie claire U.S., Cyrus spoke about her hippie-inspired look for Justin Bieber’s documentary premiere: “I had some shady wardrobe choices when I was about 16 to 18. I wore this hippie outfit to Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never premiere that I’m like, ‘Girl, who told you — it was not Woodstock, it was a premiere.'”

Sophie Turner

When Turner appeared at Kit Harington and Rose Leslie’s wedding, many were quick to criticise her choice of wedding attire. But, as the Game of Thrones star says it was all down to a wardrobe mishap – one she still regrets.

Speaking to Elle UK, the actress said: “I’ll forever regret this look [I wore to Kit Harington and Rose Leslie’s wedding]. One of my worst looks. I had a fashion emergency. It was either the thigh-high boots or these nice heels but I felt like if I just wore the heels all of my leg is showing, if I cover up a little bit then… urgh, it was a disaster. Worst fashion choice.”

Rihanna

When Rihanna wore her now-iconic Swarovski encrusted ball gown to the 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards, she downright broke the internet. And while the Fenty mogul admits she doesn’t regret the dress, she does regret not wearing bedazzled bottoms underneath.

She told Vogue in 2016: “I just liked [the dress] better without the lines underneath. Could you imagine the CFDA dress with a bra? I would slice my throat. I already wanted to, for wearing a thong that wasn’t bedazzled. That’s the only regret I have in life.’”

Rihanna has spoken about her celebrity fashion fail as being not wearing a bedazzled thong under her iconic Swarovski dress.

Selena Gomez

She’s now a red carpet icon, but even Gomez had to go through some not-so-popular looks along the way, including in 2007 at her first-ever red carpet.

Speaking to Hollywood Life, the actress said: “I remember going on my first red carpet with skinny jeans and sneakers like, ‘awesome, this is not a look that I would do ever again’ … I feel like when I wore sneakers and a lot of jeans to red carpet my stylist was really mortified.”

Selena Gomez had a red carpet fashion fail in 2007, wearing skinny jeans, sneakers, a print top and a vest.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth admitted in a Goop newsletter that she regrets how she styled her Alexander McQueen gown at the 2002 Oscars. “There were a few issues; I still love the dress itself but I should have worn a bra and I should have just had simple beachy hair and less makeup,” she said. “Then, it would have worked as I wanted it to – a little bit of punk at the Oscars.”

Eva Longoria

Speaking to Health in 2017, Longoria revealed that she regretted her all-leather look for the 2001 Tomb Raider premiere.

“It was very appropriate for Tomb Raider, but it was almost like I was going to a theme party,” she said. “The rest I just look back and go, ‘Ugh, that was the style.’ It’s like a time capsule, and there is a decade of me just showing my stomach. Like, ‘OK, Eva, can you stop wearing a crop top? Must you wear a crop top on every red carpet you go to?'”

David & Victoria Beckham

David and Victoria Beckham are one of the best-dressed couples in Hollywood, but even they admit some of their matching ensembles weren’t the best.

“Me and Victoria wore matching black leather outfits once. They were Versace,” David told H&M Magazine. “That’s one where I look back, like, ‘What were we thinking?’ We laugh about that one.”

Diane Kruger

Appearing at your first-ever Golden Globes has to be intimidating, and Diane Kruger has since admitted her choice at the 2015 Award ceremony “was not a good look.”

The actress told InStyle in 2014: “I love Marchesa, I love [designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig] and I don’t know why we talked ourselves into this dress. It was gold and my belly was exposed, but I decided to do retro hair, I had a short bob then. It was not a good look, and I think that will be remembered.”

Paris Hilton

When you combine your beanie and moon boots with your ballgown, there’s sure to be some fashion regrets down the road. Such was the case for Paris Hilton, who wore exactly that to the 2001 Sundance Film Festival.

She told Vogue: “I got this dress from Patricia Fields. It was like a black bustier with a giant pink tutu gown — it was too drastic. I wore it with moon boots because it was snowing and I couldn’t wear my heels, and it was freezing so I had to wear this beanie.”
