Blake Lively’s Mid-Met Gala Red Carpet Outfit Change Is A Masterclass In ‘Gilded Glamour’

Serena van der Woodsen has arrived at the debutante ball.

Blake Lively understood the assignment. The 2022 Met Gala co-host arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in a resplendent dusty rose metallic gown, accessorised with matching opera globes and a tiara. It’s a masterclass in white tie dressing, the dress code for this year’s ‘Gilded Glamour’ gala.

In a moment reminiscent of Lady Gaga’s iconic midred carpet dress change, Blake Lively flipped the tails of her dress open to reveal a glittering pale blue gown.

It’s apparently an ode to the architecture of New York City, telling E! the dress’s embellishments was in reference to the art deco architucre of the art deco architecture from the Empire State Building. Her train even had “a constellation from Grand Central Station” and “lots of little references” to NYC.

According to the New York Times, the colours are said to represent the Statue of Liberty oxidising from copper to green.

The former Gossip Girl queen is no stranger to Met Gala red carpets, but this year has taken the role of co-host, alongside Regina King, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Ryan Reynolds.

It means she’s helped put together the A-list guest list (alongside Anna Wintour, of course), as well as worked with top chefs to create the menu on the night.

It’s also understood that co-chairs will often perform during the night, although we’re not sure what that means for Blake. (Last year, co-hosts Billie Eilish and poet Amanda Gorman were both reported to have performed music and poetry on stage, respectively, but it was not reported that their fellow co-chairs Timothée Chalamet and tennis star Naomi Osaka did the same.)

The 2022 Met Gala theme is ‘Gilded Glamour’, with guests asked to wear white tie to the event—the most formal of all the dress codes.

It’s a reference to the ‘Gilded Age’, an era that spanned 1870 to 1890 and was coined by Mark Twain. It was a time of prosperity and excess, marked by significant changes. The invention of the light bulb, anyone? Truly, the grandest of times.
