It Looks Like ‘Big Little Lies’ Season 3 Isn’t Happening

"There's no plan", says creator David E. Kelley

Big Little Lies finally returned to our screens in June with the highly-anticipated premiere of season two. Turns out, you’ll want to savour every bit of the new series because it’s likely going to be the last one we see. During an appearance at the Television Critics Association press tour, creator David E. Kelley indicated that a third season isn’t looking likely.

“No such plan now,” Kelley said when asked about a third season. “I think that it’s one and two, and we like where our closure is at the end of Season 2, so that will probably be it.” However, producer/stars of the hit series Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman were quick to point out that we’ve heard this one before. “That’s what you said last time,” Kidman told Kelley, while Witherspoon added, “That is. You sat here and said that last time, David.”

Kelley previously suggested he was open to the possibility of a third season. “I guess you have to stay a little open-minded because we were convinced the first one was a one-off,” he told The Hollywood Reporter back in 2017. “But we’re equally convinced that Season 2 will be it, too… Maybe not equally, but in my mind, it’s only one more year.”

Season 2, which saw Andrea Arnold replace Jean-Marc Vallée as director, will explore the “malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode…the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom,” HBO’s description reads.
