Nowadays, most of us are used to buying our skincare online. It’s easy, effective and doesn’t involve leaving the house. While it all sounds great in theory (and I’ve definitely been known to buy a few face masks from the couch), it doesn’t always mean we’re putting the right things on our faces. That being said, paying hundreds of dollars to see a skin specialist isn’t exactly appealing either. So where does that leave us? Thankfully, not in a deep pit of despair, because a new online service has just launched which is going to majorly shake up the skincare game. Enter, zebrafish collective.
This new brand is an online service designed to take all the guesswork out of high-quality skincare without excluding you from the process. I was lucky enough to trial it out, so if you’re keen to learn a little more about who they are and what they offer, you’ve come to the right place.
Who are they?
Given that they’re fairly new, you might not have heard of them yet (but once you have, there’s no turning back). The brand has been founded by Dr Sean Arendse and Katanya Brelsford who are both experts in their field — that field being skin.
Sean is also the founder of Flawless Rejuvenation, which is an award-winning aesthetic skin clinic that has the likes of Bec Judd among its clientele (so you know it’s the real deal). Both Sean and Katanya are passionate about providing people with professional-grade skincare alongside expert advice to help you feel more confident in your choices. The platform is home to over 300 products from big name brands in the skincare game like Skinceuticals, Medik8 and iS Clinical, along with some newer names as well.
Oh, and if you’re wondering if the brand name holds a special meaning, it turns out that it does. The zebrafish has the insane ability to regenerate vital organs like their heart and other critical cells, and, given that great, glowy skin is all about cell regeneration, it makes sense that the brand drew inspiration from this remarkable little fish.
How does it work?
I had my first consult this week and was blown away by how easy the whole process was. I was matched with the lovely Kahlia (one of the brands dermal clinicians), who scheduled a video consultation with me. During our session, she asked me a series of questions about my skin, from my current routine and areas of concerns to what I was hoping to achieve. I think a lot of people are put off by seeking professional advice as it can seem really daunting, but this couldn’t have been less intimidating. That being said, if you’re feeling camera shy there’s always a live chat functionality which still gives you access to the team. And yes, it’s a real human being on the other side, not a robot — I asked!
Regardless of whether you choose the video or live chat consult, it’s wild to think that speaking one of the brands dermal clinicians is a free process given how much you actually get out of the session. I actually went away with a better understanding of my acne and why it’s been appearing on my face in certain ways, which is something I’d never understood before.
After my chat with Kahlia, she went away to work on my personalised prescription plan and it was in my hands within 24 hours. I was really surprised to see how much detail she’d gone into (again, given that the consultation was free), with Kahlia highlighting my skin concerns and the subsequent products she recommended. Along with each product, she gave a bit of information as to why she’d chosen that specific one and how it was going to help me achieve my skin goals. This helped me to feel really confident in the products I was using, and also avoids you slapping random things on without any thought (which we’ve all been guilty of).
After the products were introduced, you also receive information on when you should be using them and how much to use as well, which is another handy thing to have on file if you’re forgetful like me. Once you’ve received the prescription, all that’s left to do is buy the products and start your new skin journey!
I’m only a few days in but I’m already feeling more in control of my skin than I have in a long time. It makes a huge difference to invest in a skincare routine that’s been personally tailored just for you and your concerns, rather than buying something simply because a friend recommended it.
The power of purchasing the right skincare can’t be overstated, so if you’re someone who feels like your current routine isn’t really working, you should definitely book a consult with zebrafish collective. That way, you can feel confident that you’re using all the right products that have been professionally recommended, and you still don’t have to leave the house to do it. Dreamy, right?
