Why Supplements Could Be The Key To Transforming Dull, Lacklustre Locks Into An Enviable Mane

Thick, lush, shiny. They’re all words we want associated with our hair. But if your locks feels more blah than brilliant, you’re not alone.
“Hair loss and hair thinning are very common,” says Lauren Dewsbury, senior research scientist at Vida Glow. “Anywhere from 6 per cent to 38 per cent of healthy women will experience some degree of hair loss in their lives.”

First, a quick science lesson about hair. Every one of our hairs is made by one of thousands of little engine rooms called hair follicles, which live under the skin of our scalp. Follicles go through a cycle of growth, rest, fall and regeneration that repeats itself over and over. A standard hair remains on your head for about three to seven years before falling out. “On average, we lose between 50 to 100 hairs every day,” says Dewsbury. So there’s no need to be freaked out by the amount you see washing down the shower drain; Dewsbury says it’s completely normal – unless you’re not replacing those hairs.

Things start to go amiss when certain factors (either internal or external) start to muck with the hair cycle. Follicles can speed up their cycle, meaning you’re losing more hair, or they can slow down in the growth phase, leaving you with finer, more limp hair. Worst case: a follicle can shut down completely, putting a halt to hair production all together. The issue is that life can get in the way. While we can thank mum or dad for the texture and colour of our hair, what we do with it daily accounts for the lion’s share of the damage.

“Genetics, hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy or menopause, nutritional deficiencies, stress or trauma and medical conditions can be reasons for hair loss,” explains Dewsbury, who also points out that hair styling and colouring play a role in hair thinning, hair loss and dullness. Thanks to the pandemic, stress could be a contributor to your lacklustre hair. The reason is that when we’re feeling overwhelmed, our body produces cortisol. This stress hormone motivates us out of sticky situations (the fight-or-flight scenario), but works against us in hair growth. Experts say cortisol prevents the regeneration of hair follicle stem cells, which means poor growth and hair thinning over time.

Then there is diet. Late-night Uber Eats orders might be fun, but overdo it and the habit could lead to a deficiency in micronutrients, forcing the body to prioritise: organs get first dibs, while hair moves to the back of the line. “Good-quality nutrition is extremely important for hair health,” says Dewsbury. “If hair follicles don’t have the building blocks they need, growth will be impaired, hair can start to thin and overall hair condition can decline.” To get what it really needs to look its best,
hair needs a good supply of zinc, essential fatty acids, B vitamins, iron, iodine and selenium.
