Google has released its most up-to-date findings for skincare search terms worldwide, and the results are eye-opening to say the least.
The search engine analysed the most popular search terms in the US, France and Japan to determine which beauty trends are about to hit the big time, and which are on their way out.
The standout? Face masks, in all their various forms. From sheet to charcoal, 24-karat gold to peel, we just can’t get enough of the stuff.

It all started, as most skincare trends do, in Japan. “Masks have been the most prominent in Japan over the past five years as a sustained riser,” the Google report states. “The trend has picked up quickly in the US, while user interest is beginning to decline in Japan.”
That’s because they’re now moving onto masks for heels, hands, cuticles and legs, according to the report. And if previous data is anything to go by, we’ll soon be following suit.

Interestingly, the increase in mask popularity has led to a decline in searches for facials of the in-salon variety. The most popular mask searches include turmeric masks, charcoal masks, sheet, peel-off, dead sea mud and bentonite clay.

Beyond masking, Google reports an 83 per cent rise in searches for vegan beauty products (particularly vegan chapsticks and body wash), as well as, somewhat bizarrely, a big leap for bath bombs.
