1. Anti-pollution skincare

Dior, Elizabeth Arden, Clarins and Estee Lauder all launched a new breed of skincare into the market in 2016 – lotions and potions that work to counteract the damaging effects of pollution on our skin. As the world’s cities get increasingly crowded and polluted, it’s exactly what we all need. Stay tuned for new launches from Dermalogica and a slew of other brands designed to prevent environmental-induced free radical damage in the months ahead.

2. Natural beauty

The day Kim Kardashian swapped contouring for non-touring (read: the way we all used to do our make-up), it became official: natural beauty is back. Channel the bare-faced make-up looks we saw on the S/S ’17 runways and keep the heavy contouring to a minimum. “2017 will be about a sheer, dewy, almost pastel complexion for spring/summer,” says Laura Mercier head of artistry Anne Salem. Her top tip? “The foundation sponge is making a huge comeback! Its sheer application of foundation makes it a must for anyone wanting a sheer dewy look.”

3. The injectable backlash

Let’s say goodbye to the trout pout in 2017 – enough with the larger-than-life, Insta-inspired lip injections and in with a more natural look. Expect to see more high-tech topical treatments that give injectables a run for their money in the anti-ageing stakes this year – good news for anyone with an aversion to needles.

4. Single ingredients

Forget ingredients lists that span the full length of your product – beauty brands are realising that when it comes to great skin, less is often more. First came Chanel’s La Solution 10 De Chanel – a game-changing cream for sensitive skin that contained just 10 select ingredients – to be followed by Kiehl’s new Apothecary Preparations, which offers a bespoke approach to product.

5. ‘80s colour

First came disco glitter on eyes, lips and nails – next, it will be all about a return to wild ‘80s colour. As seen at Louis Vuitton, Fendi and Keno, neon eyes are set to compete with your go-to nude shadows in 2017 – for a subtle nod to the trend, experiment with electric blue liner a la Emma Stone, Marion Cotillard and Olivia Munn.
