Beach. Pool. Sun. Air conditioning. Humidity frizz. Summer is arguably the most fun season of the year but it can come at a cost to our locks. Too much sun, sea and air-con can leave strands parched and straw-like. So we’ve rounded up the best advice and must-dos from hair experts to achieve a shiny, soft, nourished mane. Welcome to your best summer hair yet.
Beachy Texture
Everyone’s hair is different, “so it’s important to work with your natural texture and not try to make it too polished or too perfect,” says Chris Appleton. The celebrity hairstylist regularly tends to Kim Kardashian’s mane and has created some of JLo’s most famous styles.
“Getting a haircut that works with your texture helps.” Appleton also recommends adding a texturising spray, especially if your hair is very soft or just washed. “It gives you that next-day feel where it’s a bit gritty. It also makes hair easier to work with.”
Master The Wet Look
“The wet look is one of my favourites,” says Appleton. “It’s perfect for summer and can look really elegant but it can also be great for the beach.”
Saturate Hair With Product
“Waterproof technology is a game changer but a lot of people don’t use it properly,” says Appleton. “You need to really saturate hair with the product.”
The celeb stylist has long used Color Wow Dream Coat, “because it’s light like water, not heavy. But waterproofing technology allows you to blow-dry it into hair so it can act like a base that will keep your style from dropping. My top tip would be to saturate the hair in it.”

Make It Humidity And Frizz Proof
When Jennifer Lopez performed at the Super Bowl in 2020, humidity was sky high. “It was a nightmare,” says Appleton, who styled JLo’s hair for the event.
To combat the issue, he used Color Wow Dream Coat anti-frizz spray. “It helps give me the finish I like, no matter how compromised the hair is,” he says
Climate Controlled Curls
Curly hair can really suffer in hot, humid weather. Look for products that boast tech that seals the cuticle, locks in moisture and locks out humidity for greater shine, hold and definition, and less frizz.

Invest In Multi-Purpose Tools To Stop Frizz
The beauty of multipurpose tools is that “they can save you time and offer versatility by catering for different hair types and creating a range of styles”, says celebrity stylist Peter Thomsen, who is also an ambassador for Dyson. To prevent damage, he recommends opting for tools that won’t over-heat hair.
Try Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler. “It’s a wet-to-dry styler that gives you a professional salon finish with incredible natural shine.”

Don’t Be Rough With Wet Hair
“I see a lot of women just rip into their hair, especially when they’re brushing,” says Thomsen. “Be as gentle with strands as you would be with your skin. When hair is damp, use a wide-tooth comb.”

Try this: Kerasilk Keratin Treatment
Unmanageable mane? Kerasilk’s in-salon offering may be your long-term solution.
What it does: A semi-permanent hair smoothing treatment, this in-salon process is ideal for coarse, thick and frizzy hair types. Using heat-activated KeraShape Technology to build new bonds and cross-links inside the hair follicle, it’s a great treatment when smoothing the cuticle, relaxing curl patterns and taming unruly frizz is your goal.
It’s also a go-to for boosting resilience, manageability and overall health. Importantly, and unlike traditional Keratin treatments, Kerasilk’s vegan formula is free from nasties (such as formaldehyde) that can be particularly dangerous to inhale. Instead, the formula is dosed with biomimetic silk to help strengthen, and shea oil for a soft, shiny finish.
Time: 2-3 hours in the salon chair.
Lasts: Four to five months, depending on hair type.
Price: From $400 per treatment.

Post-Swim Care
“Blonde hair needs to be well looked after outside of the salon, especially in summer when we are in and out of the salty ocean and sunshine,” says celebrity hairstylist Diane Gorgievski. “Ensuring you have the right haircare is essential in this relationship with blonde. Leave-in conditioning products are great post-swim.”
