Cold weather can make even the most resilient skin tetchy so when I voyaged to Antarctica, one of the coldest places on earth, I needed a winter-weight skincare routine that would get my skin through eleven days of sub-zero temperatures. To be skin prepared, I asked Cathy Galileos, head trainer at Sukin, what skincare measures I should take before heading down south – and her advice translates to our Australian winter too. “The combination of chilly weather, wind, central heating and pollution can make skin sensitive in winter,” says Galileos.
#1 Cleanse
Glowing winter skin starts with clean skin, especially in the cold Antarctica weather so I was careful to double cleanse day and night using Sukin Cream Cleanser. “Cleansing morning and night is a non-negotiable,” says Galileos. To get skin perfectly clean, try double cleansing. Start with an oil or cream cleanser then follow with a foaming formulation.

#2 Add winter-weight ingredients
Before I went to Antarctica, I made sure I was armed with ingredients rich in essential fatty acids. My go-to was rosehip oil and vitamin E. “Rosehip is deeply nourishing and a powerful skin rejuvenator,” says Galileos. “While vitamin E is a fat soluble essential nutrient, which is anti-inflammatory and combats the effects of free radicals.”

#3 Layer up
In the freezing temperatures and biting winds of Antarctica, layering up nutrient-rich hydrating skincare helps keep skin glowing. “During winter, restore skin and add an instant hit of hydration and nutrients by introducing a serum or a facial oil,” advises Galileos. “These offer the highest concentration of active ingredients.”
#4 Exfoliate
Exfoliating every three or four days helped buff away dead skin cells that built up on my skin due to the extreme weather. “Be diligent,” says Galileos “A gentle exfoliant once a week promotes healthy skin by sloughing off dead skin and increases cellular regeneration.”
Try: Sukin Super Greens Detoxifying Facial Scrub, $13.95.
#5 Mask
On the days in Antarctica when my skin needed a hydration boost, I applied a hydrating face mask. “A facial masque deeply nourishes and restores the vitality of your skin,” says Galileos.
