Beauty Trend Report: Spring/Summer 2020

marie claire's guide to this season's bold, bright and sparkling trends

For spring/summer 2020, make-up has plenty of artistic freedom, while hair is either perfectly polished or loose and luscious. Whatever you choose, now is your moment to make an impact.

Pearl- Studded Locks

From strings of pearls at Khaite to fishtail braids studded with pearls at Andrew GN, this is the season to embellish your hair with those pretty jewels of the sea.

1920s vibes

Super sleek with finger waves, the buns at Ermanno Scervino gave models an old-world yet modern feel (ask your stylist for this hairdo when you want to look ultra polished), while the swept-back styles at Tory Burch are your go-to workday goals.

Painted Buns

Anything but ballerina and far from school-fete hair painting, buns take an artistic turn. Sleek and tied low at Moschino, hair was streaked with paint by hairstylist Julien d’Ys, while at Marni, the look was more rustic, with hair coated in white paint.

BEAUTY NOTE Instead of getting the paint kit out, add a hint of colour with a bright clip.

Relaxed ‘Do

Like low-key hair? This is your season. From the swept-over waves at Balmain to the low and loose buns at Victoria Beckham (given a twist with old-school ballerina hair nets), this summer it all comes down to good hair maintenance.

All Tied Up

Keep your neck and shoulders cool this summer by channelling the season’s updo trend. From Fendi’s casual single, and sweet double knots to the twisted loops at Giorgio Armani, hair is up, up and away.

Highlighter Eyes

Keen to break away from your nude eyeshadow palette? Neon is set to be a big make-up trend in 2020. From acid yellows and popping orange lids at Nicole Miller to fluorescent pinks at Anna Sui, this trend is more wearable than you might think. Just stick to one shade only and keep the rest of your make-up pared right back.

Feline Flicks

This make-up favourite has been updated with metallics. Take your cues from LaQuan Smith, where glistening bronze was swept across lids and dragged out to create a dramatic wing.

BEAUTY NOTE Metallic shades of bronze and gold are flattering on all eye colours. Just add black mascara.

Golden Hour

From all-out bedazzlement at Valentino, meticulously created by make-up artist Pat McGrath, to a hint of gold under the inner lower lashes at Annakiki (definitely one to try at home), gold takes centrestage.

Painterly Eyes

From the Cirque du Soleil-inspired peepers at Chromat to the almost-impressionistic lids at Salvatore Ferragamo, eyes are anything but “by the book” this season. Go ahead and express yourself.

Tonal Tones

Last season it was all about blush being used on everything from cheeks to eyes. This year, it’s time to swap over to your bronzer. The look at Guy Laroche, created by Pat McGrath, is a perfect example of multitasking one of our favourite summer make-up products.

Neutral Nudes

When it wasn’t pushing experimental boundaries, make-up was pared back and nude. We love the  flawless neutral skin at Giorgio Armani. Incidentally, even these eyelids were specked with clear glitter pieces, proving sparkle is a can-do with just about any look.

Glitter and shine have been taken to greater heights. At Off-White, models’ nasal bridges were adorned with a glittering butterfly shape, while at Marc Jacobs, peepers were given glittering inner-eye detailing. Consider this your moment to use that sparkly shade in your eyeshadow palette.

BEAUTY NOTE From colour to glitter, this is your moment to experiment with eye looks. Everything goes.

So French, So Modern

The ’90s French manicure is back this year with cornered tips and pops of colour. Take your cues from Oscar de la Renta, where sophisticated beige nails were tipped with tangerine (the new rich-girl manicure), or the edgy black painted corners of the otherwise clear-polished nails at Ulla Johnson.

Carte Blanche

Nail technicians were given creative license, taking inspiration from the masters, including Pro Hart-style multicoloured streaks at Roland Mouret, and the Mark Rothko-looking monochrome creations at I Love Pretty.

Sculptural Tips

The artistic vibe continued with cool cut-outs, such as the scallop-cut French manis at Yuhan Wang.

BEAUTY NOTE You don’t need expert manicure skills. Head to your pharmacist for stick-on nails.
