It’s no secret that travel takes a toll on our skin. When on holiday, many of us strip back our skincare routine, spend excessive time in the sun and take multiple long-haul flights, which can all lead to less-than-ideal complexions. Not to mention that travelling to different climates—whether it’s the frosty Japanese alps or arid Moroccan desert—can affect your skin’s hydration levels.
On any trip abroad, a breakout or two is almost inevitable. To keep your complexion as healthy and glowy as possible, it pays to pack a line-up of potent products in your carry-on. Think moisture-replenishing face creams, hydrating under-eye masks, targeted serums and your favourite SPF (yes, it’s possible to get sunburnt on a plane).
With a month-long trip to Europe on the horizon, I’m currently on the hunt for the best travel-sized beauty heroes to stow away in my cosmetics bag. And if there’s one product I’ve been eyeing off, it’s Elizabeth Arden’s ceramide capsules. Scientifically formulated, these single-dose capsules contain a targeted serum that’s designed to replenish the skin in one hit, making them the ideal solution for when you’re on the go. Below, I put them to the test.
Everything You Need To Know About Ceramide Capsules
If you aren’t a skincare aficionado, the term ‘ceramide’ might sound a little bit intimidating. But it’s far simpler than it seems. Ceramides are a type of lipid (fat) that naturally exist in the skin’s outer layer, forming a crucial part of the skin barrier. However, like collagen, naturally occurring ceramides decline with age.
Elizabeth Arden’s biodegradable, single-dose serums deliver a concentrated amount of ceramides, helping to lock in moisture and prevent dryness and irritation. Essentially, they’re mini skincare saviours at the best of times, but especially when you’re sitting in the dry air of a plane cabin for hours on end.
While Elizabeth Arden’s ceramide capsules collection includes a serum for every skincare concern, I decided to trial the Advanced Ceramide Capsules Daily Youth Restoring Serum. This 100 per cent waterless serum is packed with powerful ingredients—most notably advanced ceramide technology—for visibly smoother, brighter and healthier-looking skin. AKA, the radiant complexion I’m aspiring for on my European sojourn.
The formula also includes sea fennel extract to help enhance skin cell renewal, retinyl palmitate (a form of vitamin A) to support skin’s own natural collagen, plus botanicals and essential fatty acids such as vitamin E to boost moisture and reduce the appearance of fine lines.

The Results From marie claire’s Ceramide Capsule Trial
For one week, I applied the serum to my cleansed skin in the morning and at night. To open, I twisted the tab around twice, then squeezed the serum onto my fingertips and gently smoothed it onto my face and neck. On initial application, what I loved was how lightweight and silky the formulation felt as it glided on, instantly smoothing fine lines. I also noticed a new brightness and sheen to my complexion, which gave me a long-lasting ‘just-had-10-hours-of-sleep’ glow.
After one week of trialling the Daily Youth Restoring Serum, I skipped my usual concealer and wore a bare face to the office. My skin was noticeably brighter and bouncier, and within an hour I’d received not one, but two compliments on my ‘glowing’ complexion.
And with that, into my carry-on it goes.
