Why Hydration For Your Scalp Is Just As Important As Your Skin

Your fast-track to healthier hair

We don’t just crave chocolate and comfy pyjamas in winter – the dry skin-inducing conditions have us reaching for hydrating fixes like lip balm, hand cream and shine serum multiple times a day. Why? Winter’s double whammy of ice-cold air outside; cranked-up heating inside can wreak havoc on our skin and hair, leading to dryness, dullness and itchiness.

Although any self-respecting beauty addict is religious in her approach to winter skincare, even the best of us can forget to give our scalps the same level of care. But it, too, can suffer from the drying effects of the season.

“Scalp skin is no different to the skin on your face and body,” says marie claire beauty director Lucy Adams. If you’ve started to notice those telltale signs of dandruff on your black Balmain blazer, you’re not alone. Over two thirds of the Australian population suffers from dandruff – a crazy stat when you consider how simple it is to fix.

1/ Use a nourishing shampoo and conditioner regularly

You know what they say: prevention is better than a cure. Luckily, head & shoulders 3Action Formula Dry Scalp Care range does both – it cleanses, protects and moisturises. Enriched with hydrating almond oil, it’s capable of nourishing the scalp three layers’ deep to help keep dryness at bay.

“Almond oil contains a host of healthy ingredients like omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E and magnesium which help to nourish your scalp and strengthen your hair,” says Adams. The moisturising formula of the 3Action range also contains micro zinc particles, which can penetrate deep onto the scalp to give you beautiful flake-free hair* – long after you’ve rinsed the product out.

2/ Pamper your scalp as well as your face

Facial massage may be the latest big thing in beauty, but the benefits extend to your scalp too. “Regular daily massage helps to increase blood flow and boost circulation to the scalp,” says Adams.

Add scalp massage to your daily beauty routine to reap the benefits to hair and head – simply set aside at least 60 seconds while you shampoo.

3/ Eat skin-loving foods

A diet rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids will boost the skin you can see as well as what you can’t. “The scalp will benefit from a diet that supports healthy skin,” guides Adams. “Look to foods rich in essential fatty acids (nuts, fish and avocado) and high in zinc and selenium (whole grains, Brazil nuts and shell fish).”
