Wearing the stunning Chanel Haute Couture 2004 gown that the actress wore for the iconic Chanel No. 5 campaign directed by Baz Luhrmann, Nicole Kidman’s Met Gala 2023 look is both elegant and playful. Pairing the fashion with loosely dishevelled hair, tied with a black bow, and timeless makeup that was both flawless and youthful, the A-Lister pulled every bit of the star power on the Met red carpet. We talk exclusively to makeup artist Angela Levin about the actress’s stunning pink-tinged makeup look – and how we can get the look.
marie claire Australia: What was your inspiration for Nicole’s makeup?
Angela Levin: For Nicole’s Met Gala look this year, my inspiration was Chanel: iconic, timeless, admired, elegant and playful, just like her.
MC: Can you tell us how you got Nicole’s skin looking so flawless?
AL: I started by hydrating Nicole’s clean face and neck with Chanel N°1 de Chanel Revitalizing Serum and Rich Revitalizing Cream. [Then] I applied Chanel N°1 de Chanel Revitalizing Foundation in B20 with a round brush (my go-to is Chanel’s Foundation-Blending Brush N°102) on the face and neck, making sure to get an even application. With Chanel Le Correcteur de Chanel Longwear Concealer in B20, I based the eye area and side of the nose for extra coverage.
MC: Nicole’s eyes look incredible. Can you tell us how you created them?
AL: To make Nicole’s beautiful blue eyes pop, I used Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Natural Eyeshadow Palette in Deep. I applied each color almost like a rainbow to her eyelid. I blended the darkest shade into her lash line, then added the medium shade to her crease, and ended with the lightest shade on her brow bone. [Next,] with Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Noir Intense, I lined and smudged the upper lash line and placed small dots between the lower lashes. I then applied three coats of Chanel Le Volume de Chanel Mascara in Noir on the top and lower lashes. In between each coat, I brushed a small metal comb through her lashes.
MC: And for her brows?
AL: Using a brow brush, I combed the brows in an upwards direction, and touched them up with Chanel Le Gel Sourcils Longwear Eyebrow Gel in Transparent.
MC: Nicole’s cheekbones are beautiful. Can you take us through your process?
AL: I powdered [Nicole’s] face gently with Chanel Poudre Universelle Libre Natural Finish Loose Powder in 12, then applied Chanel N°1 de Chanel Lip and Cheek Balm in Healthy Pink with my fingers. I finished the cheeks with a little Chanel Poudre Lumière Highlighting Powder in White Opal.
MC: Nicole’s lips popped on the Met carpet. What did you use?
After hydrating Nicole’s lips with Chanel Hydra Beauty Nourishing Lip Care, I lined them with Chanel Le Crayon Lèvres Longwear Lip Pencil in Rose Naturel. Lastly, I added a coat of Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Colour in Intemporelle and Chanel Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in Adrienne in the centre of upper and lower lips.
