Miranda Kerr has just given birth to her fourth child, a little boy, Pierre Kerr Spiegel. The supermodel-turned-beauty-entrepreneur also shares how she juggles four boys and a beauty business.
We sat down with the model and organic beauty entrepreneur prior to the birth, to talk us through her skincare routine during pregnancy.
marie claire: Congratulations on your newest member of the family. Baby number four, Pierre.
Miranda Kerr: He is such a little ray of sunshine. He’s very easy going. And you know, he’s a very happy little boy. He’s been my easiest; I call him Peaceful Pierre.
mc: Did you take some time off for the pregnancy?
MK: When you have your own company, there’s not really no time off. It hardly feels like it anyway. But I took some time off in front of the camera; I’m back in full swing now.
mc: We can imagine that life is pretty busy now. Can you give us a snapshot of what a morning is like at your house now that you have four young boys?
MK: We’re both up before the kids are up. My husband is up every morning at 5.30am; he has done that since I met him 10 years ago. I’m up between 4.30 at 5.30am which gives me a little bit of time to do my routine. It depends on how I’m feeling; I might do a little bit of yoga, or a 20-minute workout. Then I do my skincare routine.
The kids are getting up by 6.45am so it’s busy with breakfast and breastfeeding. I drop the boys to school, and that’s when Pierre goes down for his nap. It’s juggling the work commitments that I have. Luckily, I can work from home and I manage that as best I can, but I still want to make sure that I’m there for the baby and the breastfeeding and all that.
mc: What’s your exercise of choice during your 20-minute morning workouts?
MK: I’ve been practicing Kundalini yoga for a very long time. There’s an app called The Sculpt Society, which lets you do a quick 10-minute or 20-minute workout. It’s a great way to move your body. They have postpartum and prenatal programs, it’s amazing.
mc: Can you tell us just a little bit about Baby2Baby non-profit organisation and why you decided to join with them?
MK: I’m on the board at Baby2Baby because I feel that they’re such an incredible organisation that support children in need. They really help people that aren’t able to buy those staples like nappies and formula and the essential needs for their children. It’s incredible for me to get our family involved. It’s something that Flynn and the boys enjoy doing; donating their time and helping pack the boxes.
mc: Obviously, you’ve been in the beauty industry since you were a teenager. What does beauty mean to you, and has it changed over the years?
MK: I feel like as cliché as it might sound, it does come from being comfortable in your own skin and really just shining [from] your heart and shining your light. And everyone has that light within them. It’s really about feeling comfortable in your own skin and comfortable with who you are as a person and expressing wholeheartedly all of the wonderful things that you have to offer this world.
mc: You’ve been a pioneer of organic skincare for a long time and now people are starting to really take organic on board and understand its benefits. Why do you think people are more receptive to organic and understanding how effective it can be?
MK: The reason I started Kora as a certified organic brand was because my mum had cancer in her spleen. We had to really look at everything we were doing from a 360-degree approach as a family. What products we were using and what ingredients sink into skin. When you’re pregnant, [experts] say we should be aware of what we’re putting on our skin, right? But I don’t feel like we have to just be concerned when we’re pregnant.
Our skin is the largest organ on our body, which is why I wanted to have a certified organic brand. People are becoming more fascinated and excited about organic because an organic ingredient has up to 60% more antioxidants. It’s why our products are getting incredible results; you’re avoiding the unnecessary chemicals and we’re getting up to 60% more antioxidants because of these certified organic ingredients.
mc: Can you talk me through the new cleansing balm and how it fits into your routine?
MK: The Cleansing Balm has active algae and is buttery soft. It just melts away your makeup and is super soothing. So my nighttime routine is to have a quick bath with Pierre, but I don’t get a chance to remove my makeup. So after I get him and the boys to bed, I use the cleansing balm to remove my makeup. It is incredible how gentle and effective it is; it doesn’t leave any residue on your skin. There are pineapple enzymes in there too to deeply clean your skin without stripping it so you’ll notice, your skin feels clean, but not dry.
mc: If someone wanted to live a more organic lifestyle, how would you suggest they start?
MK: It’s really important to read and educate yourself on the ingredients in everything that you’re using, because many products can claim to be natural when they only have one natural ingredient. Or they might claim to be clean, but that’s just their own definition of clean. We have a certification process from world certification body, Eco Cert Cosmos, and they have the strictest rules when it comes to everything from ingredients to packaging, and so it guarantees that our products meet the highest sustainability [measures].
mc: What products would you recommend we start with?
MK: For our whole family, I use the Body Lotion and the Body Wash, the Body Oil. Literally from day one, when they were babies.
mc: Katy Perry is said to also be a fan of Kora…
MK: We’ve seen incredible results from our turmeric collection; Katy Perry talks about the Turmeric Glow Moisturiser all the time because it’s helped her skin so much. She had acne prone skin, but she really wanted to get that glow and this product does that. My husband uses the Turmeric Scrub every day in the shower and the Turmeric Glow Moisturiser with the Noni Glow Face Oil. I’m personally obsessed with the plant stem cell range because it’s very focused on anti-aging. My skin never felt softer.
