An Award Winning Hair Colourist Shares His Expert Tips

Flatter your face!

The L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy is the longest-running hairdressing competition in the world, showcasing the brightest talent in colour. This year’s winner, Massimo Tirimacco from Adelaide salon, Zohair, chats to marie claire about his inspirations, styling tips and winning look – a striking copper lob with contouring highlights that caught the attention of both the industry judges and public, also taking home the marie claire Readers’ Choice award for 2019. He also shares with us how to recreate one of his favourite styles.

Q.WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE NEW TRENDS?

A: I am loving short hair! Bobs, lots of movement, even natural curl. I love that the more undone and deconstructed it is, the cooler it looks! Hair trends at the moment are so broad – anything goes. Also, the simple use of a hair accessory can take a basic look and make it runway ready.

Q. CAN YOU TELL US HOW YOU CREATED YOUR LOOK?

A: The past few years have been focused on cooler tones, ash and balayage, so I wanted to shake things up. For colour, I focused on the strategic placing of mocha, copper and blonde highlights. A pop of blonde around the face to contour, enhanced my model’s skin tone and made the colour more wearable.

Q. WHAT DOES WINNING THE L’ORÉAL COLOUR TROPHY MEAN TO YOU?

A: The L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy is where it all began for me. I have been a National Finalist eight times in total, including two Rising Star awards, so to win the trophy for 2019 as well as the marie claire Readers’ Choice blew me away! It’s an incredible platform that allows hairdressers at every level to create a look that’s truly unique to them.

Get The Look: Parisian Pony

For Massimo, a happy client is an everyday win. “I want my clients to be wowed every time they leave the salon,” he says. Here, he shares his top tips for styling French-girl chic at home.

Q: HOW WOULD YOU RE-CREATE THIS TEXTURED PARISIAN PONY AT HOME?

A: A low, messy pony is really on trend. It’s easy to achieve at home and the more undone, the cooler it looks! First, apply Tecni.ART Liss Control to damp hair and blow dry. Part the hair into either a deep side-part or a centre, depending on how you like it. Use a tong or waving tool and grab uneven sections of hair, wrapping it around the tong, waving away from the face. Then brush it out to create a loose bend in the hair. Apply Tecni.ART Super Dust to the pony to create texture. Pull hair to the lowest part of your nape and fasten with a hair tie. Twist a small section of hair and wrap it around the tie to conceal, then fasten underneath with a bobby pin.

Q: WHAT ARE YOUR GO -TO TECNI.ART PRODUCTS?

A: Liss Control is a must-have to smooth hair and eliminate static. Apply before you blow dry. Super Dust is great for all hair types to create texture and fullness. Apply it while you’re styling for extra body. I use Air Fix for the perfect finish. It’s strong, smells good and brushes out easily so you can re-style the next day.

Massimo’s 5 Top Styling Tips

  1. Find a good hairdresser to give you a great cut and educate you on how to maintain and style your new look at home.
  2. Use great products, like the L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.ART range.
  3. Invest in a curling tool.
  4. Accessories are so on trend at the moment, and can polish the simplest of looks. Find cool clips, ribbons, even cotton if you want to get creative!
  5. Do an up-do! The messier and more deconstructed, the better! French twists and knots are really cool at the moment – especially with added accessories.
