I’ve never been one of those organised people with a consistent hair routine; I’ve barely stayed loyal to a hairdresser for longer than a year. So when Kérastase asked if I’d like to try a personalised hair routine, I figured it was my chance to elevate my hair care from grabbing whichever product was closest.
In 2022, personalisation is the beauty trend du jour. Instead of using the ‘one’ best-selling product everyone swears by, more and more brands are offering tailored regimes to suit your beauty needs. I took Kérastase’s quiz online, which decided on the ‘hydrate my hair’ routine for me.
Included in that routine was a little bottle of magic: the Nutritive 8HR Magic Night Hair Serum. I’ve been using it for a month and quite frankly, my hair has never felt or looked healthier.

Basically, you pop it on before bed (on either dry or towel dried hair) and let your hair spend eight hours absorbing the serum, which is infused with Iris Root extract and a blend of five vitamins, including the all-important vitamin E. It’s basically a night cream for your hair. The next morning, your locks are shinier, softer, and easier to style, which is key for lazy girls like me.
The 8HR Magic Night Hair Serum has been around for a few years and is a winner with beauty gals – it was even named the best hair conditioning product in ELLE’s 2020 International Beauty Awards. On Adore Beauty, it has a 4.6/5 rating from more than 200 reviews.
It’s suitable for pretty much all dry hair types (check), doesn’t weigh down fine hair (double check) and provides definition to curly hair (okay, we hit the jackpot).
If you need more proof, I spoke to my hairdresser this week after noticing my salon (shout out Paloma in Sydney’s Paddington) was now using Kérastase products, and she said it was “honestly amazing”. Her words! Not mine!
She also gave me this excellent tip for using hair oils in general, which I’m now going to share with all of you:
- Pop the product in your dry hair before you wash it. Put a good dollop in, so that it feels like your hair is oily and gross.
- Leave for five minutes. (Read: scroll TikTok, take the rubbish out, try to decide if you should cut a curtain fringe, etc.)
- Wash your hair as normal. The warm water from the shower will open up the cuticles in your hair and the oil will go straight in.
Consider this your sign to add an oil to your routine. It’s now a permanent part of mine.
