Beloved for her high-glam makeup style, Huda Kattan (also known online as her handle, Huda Beauty) has redefined what it means to be a modern day makeup artist. After a meteoric rise on YouTube, Kattan’s gone on to build a billion-dollar beauty empire, Huda Beauty. Here, she talks beauty influencing, ride-or-die products and the device that has changed her skin.
What would you attribute your success to?
The first three years before we launched the brand, I was just blogging 24/7 from 2010–2013. After listening to the makeup community, I felt like I had my [finger on the] pulse of what they were going to like. I was lucky enough to get my foot in enough doors and beg somebody to give me a chance. My first launch of eyelashes was extremely special and scary. It was a really dramatic and surreal moment because we didn’t expect the brand to be successful, let alone become the conglomerate it is.
How have you navigated the ever-changing social media landscape?
It’s extremely challenging because there’s always new platforms, new rules, and the platform that you’re “winning” in will all of a sudden change. I still enjoy the “Get Ready With Me” and consider it my me-time. I’ve been doing them for so long, over 10 years!
Do you still enjoy YouTube?
I love binge watching on YouTube, but I actually don’t post as much on there. I want to start and I might start up again soon. I feel like what happened with my YouTube was that I started as content creator and then very quickly we became a brand and it almost became like a branded page.
So when I do personal things, I’m almost like do I do it here? Or do I not post it here? That’s actually been a challenge as a brand founder, and then still a content creator to like, find who I am. It sometimes challenging for me when I want to create a piece of content and I’m like, where does it go? I’m so happy now I have a seperate Instagram account, it gives me a little bit of a place to say and post whatever I want, beauty related or not, seperate from the brand.
What about TikTok?
I love doing reactions videos! I don’t do as many as I would like, but I love doing them. I like seeing what people are doing on the internet. It’s so fun to get excited reacting to other content creators, and then seeing them get excited, it makes me really happy.
Desert island beauty products?
Definitely our Color Corrector in Cherry Blossom, #FauxFilter Concealer in Graham Cracker and Easy Bake Powder in Peach Pie. Then I would add in a non-Huda Beauty product like K18; my hair would not survive without it and perhaps Fresh’s Emulsion. I would also want to take our lip glosses, lip liner and maybe a facial cream? I would need at least 100 products on a desert island!
If we were to take a peek inside your beauty cupboard..
My sister has a crazy beauty closet for her fragrance, mines not as big as her fragrance library, believe it or not, but there’s still quite a bit. I change my makeup out often, I don’t like to have a lot, so it’s just my favourite products, samples from our suppliers and new releases. I’m pretty organised with it!
What’s been the biggest game changer to your skin?
I’m obsessed with at-home radiofrequency machines. I love the TriPollar one. They can help lift and tighten the skin. You have to be careful using them with botox or fillers though, they don’t always mix well together. But I’ve gotten so many more comments on my pictures saying ‘oh you look so much better’. Why? I really think it’s because of the radiofrequency, it’s game changer.
Are there any makeup trends you’re loving?
I’m really excited for bronzers. I feel like that trend needs to come back, right? I love that blushes are having a moment, but I need a bronzer. Everybody wants a beautiful bronzer.
Whats the best beauty advice you’ve been given?
The most attractive thing you can do is just smile. People will gravitate towards you. My mum told me this and it sounds so cheesy but I really believe it.
