The Ultimate Guide To Frizz-Free Hair

A frizz and fancy-free summer.

No other season conjures up images of relaxation and celebration quite like summer.

But over-styling, increased humidity and salty seawater can mean the season is anything but smooth sailing when it comes to our hair.

The season of frivolity and fun can often come with a side of frizz, so we’ve put together the ultimate guide to getting smooth and silky strands—so you can be frizz and fancy-free all summer long.

The Frizz Factor

Most of us have experienced that “frizzy hair feeling”, but what exactly causes it?

Hair can look dry and frizzy when the outside layer of our hair (the cuticle layer) is raised, allowing moisture to pass through and swell within the strands. This means the cuticle can’t lay flat and appears to have a rough look or sit in a haphazard way.

While this is normally associated with damage caused by heat styling and colouring, humidity can also wreak havoc on our hair. Once the humidity of the air on the outside is greater than the level of water in your hair, the bonds inside each hair fibre are rearranged and therefore no longer sit smoothly.

Luckily, there are some things we can do to take our hair from stressed to sleek.

Use Frizz-Fighting Ingredients

Consider skipping shampoo on days when you don’t really need it and opt for sulfate-free formulas that don’t strip the hair of the natural oils that are necessary for keeping frizz at bay.

Choose products containing frizz-fighting ingredients, like keratin, which helps protect the uniformity and solidarity of the hair fibre, or lactic acid, a gentle resurfacer which can help smooth and seal the hair’s cuticle.

Most importantly, don’t forget the conditioner to help lock in hydration and smoothness, which will hide dryness, spit ends and ultimately, reduce frizz.

Then, finish your hair washing routine off by rinsing your strands in cold water. Not only does it help cool you down at the end of a hot shower, but the cold water seals the cuticle, which can help prevent moisture loss later.

Use A Smoothing Serum

A frizz-fighting serum is like liquid gold in the summer months. Rich in oils, which have anti-humidity properties, they’re an ideal solution for those wanting to tame flyaways and frizz.

Kérastase’s iconic Elixir Ultime Original Hair Oil  is enriched with carefully selected plant oils, curated for their hair benefits. High in antioxidants, sacred marula oil helps keep hair soft, supple and moisturised, while camellia oil keeps hair moist, and absorbs quickly into the hair for a high-shine finish.

Restorative and protective, it’s suitable for all hair types, nourishing and protecting against heat tools and environmental aggressors, all while reducing split ends and restoring shine (and leaving it with an intoxicating scent, too).

Use one to two pumps—on damp hair for heat protection and detangling benefits, or dry for a smooth and shiny finish—to the lengths of hair as often as needed.

Embrace The Chaos

When it comes to the summertime static, we’re all in the same boat, and sometimes, it can be hard to avoid the frizz factor altogether.

Embrace hairstyles that work with the frizz, not against it, like soft or tousled waves. Or, pull hair into a topknot or braid that works better with a little texture for a natural, off-duty look.

For curly hair, frizz will actually help keep hair bouncy and luscious, not limp, so prepare your hair with a super-hold mousse or hairspray to keep your curls together (and moisturised) as your hair dries. Defined, delectable curls? Yes, please.
