Women such as Demi Moore and Alycia Debnam-Carey are able to straddle that line between “done” and “undone” with chic dexterity. The secret, says Brad Mullins, celebrity hairstylist and ambassador for Hask, is clever prep work, getting hair into peak healthiness and working with your natural texture. The key is making sure your hair is in great condition,” says Mullins, who has tended to the locks of Elsa Pataky, Celeste Barber and Alycia Debnam Carey.

“Sometimes it’s all about embracing your natural wave and adding a bit more body with heat styling where it’s needed to create that perfectly cool, undone, It-girl look.”

Here, Mullins answers all our burning questions on how to get hair and scalp health at its peak – nail those, and you’ll be able to jump out of bed and get on with your day looking effortlessly chic.

What’s the key to getting undone hair that still looks polished?

“You should do a treatment once a week and ensure your natural-dried hair is healthy. If you air-dry your hair and it tends to get frizzy, that’s a sign you need more moisture. Use a treatment once a week, along with a serum, a leave-in conditioner and a heat protector to regularly keep hair hydrated and protected. It makes all the difference.”

What’s your current favourite red carpet hair look?

“How can you not love Demi Moore’s long, sleek, glossy locks? It’s absolute dream hair. I also really loved Selena Gomez’s sleek wet look at the BAFTAs. That was so chic and sophisticated.”

How do we get shine into dull-looking hair?

“The best way is by using a hydrating treatment once a week. My go-to products are the Hask Leave-In Treatment Cream and the Hask Argan Oil Repairing Oil; they keep hair healthy and polished.” If we want effortless waves… “I’d suggest using a large tong and then brushing it out with a bristle brush after curling. If it’s still too curly, apply a serum to weigh the hair down and help create a soft, beautiful wave.”

How do you give stars like Alycia Debnam-Carey and Elsa Pataky their beautiful, relaxed yet chic style?

“I absolutely love it every time I work with Alycia. She has amazing hair with its own natural wave, which I like to enhance using a styling tong on parts for that cool, undone feel. Elsa has a beautiful natural wave in her hair, too. Sometimes I like to work with her hair wet, adding shine and moisture, and using a diffuser to enhance her own natural wave.”

What are your best maintenance tips for healthy hair?

“Invest in a good bristle brush and brush your hair before shampooing. It is also very important to use a great shampoo and conditioner and treat your hair once a week. Don’t forget to use a heat protector before styling as well. These simple steps can really keep your hair in top condition.
