As a result of the global pandemic, the last year—some may even say the last two years—have seen red carpets left by the wayside and Hollywood award ceremonies taking place virtually, giving the world an insight into the homes of our favourite A-list celebrities.
But for this year’s 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards, there were jaw dropping red carpet looks aplenty. And while, yes, the ceremony was a “limited audience of nominees and their guests”, there were still many impressive beauty moments—and upcoming trends—to take note of.
And thankfully, creative, fresh and innovative hair and makeup was the order of the night for Hollywood’s elite. However, there was one particularly noticeable trend that took centre stage at the event: matching eye makeup to fashion.
While a finished red carpet look typically sees beauty and fashion make their own statements, all while working together harmoniously, the Emmy Awards saw the two come together in the most literal of ways.
Take, for example, actress Yara Shahidi. The Grown-ish star sported an emerald off-the-shoulder Dior grown, that she expertly paired with a shimmering green shadow over her lid and lower waterline, and finished with a black wing. The rest of her look was left stripped back with flushed cheeks, a simple, peachy-nude lip and a sleek, up-do that helped pull focus to her eyes.
However, the trend was far from finished with Shahidi. I May Destroy You star Michaela Coel also took on the matching moment, donning a striking neon yellow two-piece outfit that she paired with a matching bright yellow winged eyeliner, sitting above a simple, chic black wing. As for the rest of her look? Her sleek, buzz cut helped draw attention to her stunning eye moment, which was paired with mauve cheeks and a glossy lip to let the bright hues speak for themselves.
Joining Coel on the matching bandwagon was The Crown star Emma Corrin, who not only has the world gawking over her Miu Miu pastel yellow strapless gown—yes, with a matching bonnet and a black claw-like manicure—many were drawn to her eyes for a nod to the trend. Sporting a matching yellow-gold shadow, the glittery makeup moment was the star of the show, paired with a seemingly foundation free complexion, rosy cheeks and a similar lip.
However, speaking of lips, this year’s red carpet saw the iconic hue make its way to the pouts of our favourite famous faces as well. Many took to the cameras sporting bold lip colours rather than bright eyes for a different take on the statement, colour-friendly trend.
As for The Queen’s Gambit‘s Anya Taylor-Joy, the star opted for an incredibly bold look, pairing her pale yellow Dior gown to her platinum-blonde tresses that were pinned in an elegant Old Hollywood up-do. As for her makeup, she kept her complexion and eyes stripped back, while opting for a bold red lip that added the perfect amount of glamour to an already show-stopping look.
But it wasn’t just Taylor-Joy who picked up their favourite crimson for the special night. This Is Us alum Mandy Moore brought the drama with a fabulous front fringe—inspired by Audrey Hepburn, according to her hair stylist Ashley Streicher—and a voluminous high ponytail to match her Carolina Herrera gown. However, it was her choice of lip colour that really stole the show.
The perfect match to her full-bodied dress, Moore was one of many other Hollywood A-listers that spent the night proving how matching makeup to fashion may just be the next best beauty trend come 2022. And quite frankly, we’re on board.
