When it comes to certain celebrities, you’ll rarely see them stray from their signature look. From Audrey Hepburn in that black Givenchy dress in Breakfast At Tiffany’s to supermodel Linda Evangelista’s famous pixie cut, there’s no doubt that certain outfits and hairstyles have defined the careers of many celebrities over the years.
And when it comes to hair, there’s perhaps no one more iconic than Australia’s very own Elle Macpherson. The supermodel and wellness mogul might have been a canvas for many looks throughout her four-decade-long modelling career, but one thing has remained consistent throughout: Her signature long hair.
Besides ‘The Body’, Macpherson’s cascading, sun-kissed mane has been her defining look throughout the years. Although she varied the style, switching between loose beach waves and pin-straight strands, her locks always fell below the waist. That is, except for one period during 2006, when she briefly sported a stylish, shoulder-grazing cut.
Photographed on a mere handful of occasions with the shorter ‘do, Macpherson maintained her classic honey blonde hue and ’70s-style centre part, but allowed the lack of length to take centre stage with soft curls.
Having otherwise always had mid-length to very long hair, the hairstyle was the shortest Macpherson had ever gone, although the supermodel expressed to People back in 2014 that she wished she’d had the inner strength to go even shorter.
“I wish that I would have the courage to cut all my hair off and wear a pixie,” Macpherson said. “Maybe I’ll just borrow a wig!”
While in the country for her Business Chicks tour in 2019, Macperson told Harper’s BAZAAR Australia that she wasn’t opposed to going short again.
“I’ve been thinking about it. I’d like to go shorter… when I get back [home] I might go for short hair,” Macpherson said, adding that her curly 2006 cut wasn’t the only time she went for the chop.
“There are better pictures [of it]! There are some shots where I had taken extensions out and I had this very wispy surf-y hair and it was very blonde. There was also an Italian Vanity Fair cover that I did, with [short] distressed blonde hair. I love those photos.”
Stay tuned for Macpherson’s next chop. No doubt it will be headline-making.
