Mark our words: this year, colour is making a comeback. For so long, the focus has been on skincare. Now, makeup is making a return with statement colour.
Hit play on the video above to see our five head-turning looks in motion: modern red lip, silveratti, golden glow, ’90s terracotta and jewel tones.
Ready to get creative? Here, makeup artist Peter Beard explains how to add a dash of hue to your pristine complexion.
Red Lip
A standout red lip imparts an instant update. To give your red lip a modern edge, “Pair it with a clean face, forgoing the blush, bronzer and powder,” Beard tells marie claire. “Wear it as a statement stamped onto your mouth.”
Products used: ColorStay Glaze Stick Shadow in Gilt, $19.95; ColorStay Makeup for Normal/Dry Skin, $34.95; ColorStay Satin Ink in On a Mission, $26.95; all from Revlon.
Silveratti
A touch of metallic adds a clean and modern freshness. “Take the idea of metallic accents and apply it to your makeup,” Beard says. “Add a slick over an eyelid, an inner corner highlight or a metallic glint to highlight your Cupid’s bow.”
Consider adding a touch of silver to your evening look – low light gives reflective metallics a chance to shine.
Products used: PhotoReady Eye Contour Kit in Avant Garde, $25.95; SkinLights Prismatic Highlighter in Daybreak Glimmer, $24.95; SkinLights Face Glow Illuminator in Sunrise Luster, $24.95; all from Revlon.
Golden Glow
Ethereal sheens and golden flecks add subtle dimension and glow. “To enhance her skin, I added bronzer that emphasises the effects of sunlight on the skin. Using liquid bronzer, create sections of warmth along the hairline, above the eyebrows and over the outer perimeter of the cheekbones.”
Products used: So Fierce! Prismatic Palette in Tantrum, $24.95; SkinLights Face Glow Illuminator in Sunburst Bronze, $24.95; SkinLights Powder Bronzer in Cannes Tan, $24.95; all from Revlon.
’90s Terracotta
State your claim on the ’90s with bold neutrals. Keeping it tonal means you can make a statement on both eyes and lips. “Being tonal brings a harmony to such a strong statement.”

Jewel Tones
Swing a nostalgic ’60s vibe with an emerald green palette in a matte finish. “Try a sheer metallic wash over your lid or a matte colour as an eyeliner,” Beard suggests.
