Why wear black mascara when you can wear blue? Or for that matter, hot pink? Or lime green? Or even – wait for it – orange?
Having never, ever seen anyone wear any other mascara colour than black, I didn’t quite believe brightly coloured mascara was an actual thing that existed, let alone that people bought willingly and wore.
I have never been so wrong.
Instagram is mad for high-voltage eye make-up right now, from swipes of gold-flecked orange (see Selena Gomez and Jessica Alba) to vivid washes of lime green, gaudy purple and every colour in between.
But the trend isn’t limited to eyeshadow – the extra-adventurous can have a flutter with neon mascara too.
As someone with a sense of adventure that doesn’t stray much further than the occasional bold lip, this was never going to be my jam. I like my mascara jet black and glossy, not glare-inducing – and definitely not fluoro.
But the epitome of chic, By Terry founder Terry de Gunzberg, disagrees. “Blue mascara is a great way to subtly update your look with a flash of colour,” she says. “It makes your eyes look brighter and less tired, and is easier to wear than blue eyeshadow.”

I’m wearing the M.A.C In Extreme Dimension Mascara, $42, which comes in 16 zany shades. I tried Sky Is The Limit and Abs of Steel (both at once, which in hindsight probably wasn’t the best idea).
When I eventually emerged from the office bathrooms, of course people stared. But everyone I spoke to was impressed by the formula’s lash-lengthening and thickening powers.
This may be my first and last time wearing coloured mascara (for obvious reasons; see above), but I’m definitely buying this baby in black.
