Clarins’ Cult Joli Rouge Lipsticks Have Been Reformulated (And We Need One In Our Bag Stat)

...and one in the car, and one on the bedside table!

Having three things on the go at any one time is how many of us check off the daily to-do list. So having beauty products in our immediate orbit to help make it all happen is a plus. If you’re getting around with 15 lip products in your handbag (guilty) and wish there was just one, the newly revamped Joli Rouge from Clarins could help lighten your load.

Why Do We Love Clarins Lipsticks?

Clarins’s lipsticks are a favourite with celebrities such as Georgina Burke and Kate Middleton and now the brand’s cult-favourite lipstick, Joli Rouge Lipstick with 32 shades and three finishes, has been updated to pull multiple duties while you wear it. Win.

It’s also planet friendlier, thanks to 20 per cent recycled plastic packaging and a refillable casing, and because it’s made from mostly natural ingredients (80 per cent) it supports the communities that supply these natural ingredients.

“At Clarins, we pride ourselves on combining skincare elements into our makeup products,” says Anne Salem, Clarins educator – makeup development. “Joli Rouge is no exception to this rule: the formula has high-colour payoff and long-lasting pigment, with a formula which customers have grown to love. It looks like a lipstick, works like skincare and cares for the planet.”

How Has The Formulation Changed?

What makes this new formulation special is that it’s really skincare dressed up as lipstick. Dosed with natural ingredients including lip-loving camellia oil and shea butter in the satin and shine formulations and apricot oil in the velvet, this range will keep lips hydrated all day long. Meaning? You won’t have to lug around a sidekick lip balm in your handbag as well.

“Regardless of which finish you choose, the Joli Rouge lipstick cares for your lips, keeping them nourished … as well as give them a pop of colour,” says Salem.

What Are The Must-Try Shades?

A classic red lipstick should be considered the little black dress of your makeup bag. And don’t be afraid to go bright: a classic red really does suit all skin types, especially when you make it your own with your choice of finish.

Our recommendation if you’re new to a statement lip? Get a velvet shade and dab it on with a finger for a blurred, just-eaten-berries look with staying power.

“Every woman needs a signature red, and 742 Joli Rouge speaks to that,” says Salem. “It’s a classic red shade which comes in three different finishes, from shiny to matte. This is a must in your makeup wardrobe.”

On the days when you want to just get on with things, a nude lip is your best friend. Simply put, they’re easy-wear and you can swipe them on sans mirror if you’re in a hurry.

Knowing this, Clarins has expanded the selection of nude shades in this new release. If you’re keen to update, try Soft Berry, a pinky nude that’s chicly understated and suits most skin types.

Is Clarins Joli Rouge A Sustainable Lipstick?

We can feel good wearing Joli Rouge thanks to Clarins’ genuine steps towards sustainability. “We believe in makeup made for women, by women,” says Salem. “Joli Rouge embodies [this]; our partnership with the Global Shea Alliance ensures that the shea butter in all our lipsticks is sourced from small-scale cooperatives in West Africa composed exclusively of women.”

How Do I Apply Lipstick?

If you want to up your service to the globe a notch, you can also refill your lipstick case with a new bullet, which helps cut down on waste and carbon emissions. “Currently, the refill option is available online, encouraging our customers to help us with our commitment to care for the planet,” says Salem.
