Ever since its ’90s inception on Friends, Jennifer Aniston’s hairstyle as Rachel Green has arguably become the most iconic in history—dictating a beauty trend that has since been reimagined on the likes of Selena Gomez and Bella Hadid.
Now, Chrissy Teigen is giving the layered, feathery cut a 2020 twist, courtesy of hairstylist Tracey Cunningham. “New hair who this, it’s me obviously i don’t get it. @traceycunningham1,” she wrote alongside a short clip of the cut, which also includes Rachel’s signature chunky golden-blonde highlights.
The perfectly choppy, shaggy layers and the mid-length cut became the most requested style at salons following Aniston’s appearance on the sitcom, and hairstylist Chris McMillan is still asked for it to this day.
Pre-lockdown earlier this year, Selena Gomez debuted a very 2020 take on the classic cut during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show on March 8. According to an Instagram post by Gomez’s hairstylist Marissa Marino, the inspiration behind the star’s look was a hybrid of ‘The Rachel’ shag and Goldie Hawn’s flippy curtain bangs and voluminous layers in The First Wives Club.
“Selena on @kellyclarksonshow today! It’s a great interview so be sure to watch,” Marino wrote. “Hair inspo was ‘The Rachel’ meets Goldie Hawn in First Wives Club.”
Interestingly, despite its iconic status and popularity, Aniston was never a fan of her signature look. “I was not a fan of ‘The Rachel,'” the former Friends star told Glamour back in 2015.
It seems quite a few A-list stars would politely disagree, finding new ways to guide the bouncy, feathery style into 2021.
