Most hairdressers will tell you, it can be nearly impossible to dye brown hair blonde in a short amount of time, but that doesn’t mean our favourite celebrities haven’t tried.
Countless brunette celebrities have gone lighter over the years, including Miley Cyrus and Anne Hathaway, but we have also seen natural born blondes sport other colours throughout their career, only to return to their straw-hued roots for a time.
Here, we count down 10 celebrities that have famously gone blonde, and what their hair looks like now.
Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie may have been blonde back in the 90s, but as of 2023 she has transformed her hair once again, alongside the announcement of a new collection with French fashion maison Chloé.
It’s the first partnership for her new label Atelier Jolie, so it only makes sense to rock a new do. Her lighter look features blonde highlights and face framing, transforming her classic dark brown locks into a bronde aesthetic.
Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway famously bleached her natural brunette pixie cut bottle blonde for the 2013 Met Gala, and has flirted with the look ever since. While she is rocking a darker chestnut colour now, she was also spotted with a longer blonde hairstyle for 2019 film Serenity.
Rihanna
Rihanna has been very experimental with her hair over the years, having been bright red for a long time before moving back to her natural colour in more recent years. But in 2012, the star had a full blonde shaggy, shoulder-length cut, with a fringe and root stretch, and it was the moment.
Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish grew up with blonde locks, and decided to bleach them almost white while launching her career. Think: her ‘Ocean Eyes’ era.
In the years that followed, the singer became known for her black hair and bright green roots, but for the launch of album Happier Than Ever, she bleached her hair blonde and got a layered cut.
Emilia Clarke
We may have become accustomed to seeing Emilia Clarke with blonde hair in her role as ‘Khaleesi’ in Game of Thrones, but the star is a natural brunette. Yet, in 2018, the star bleached her hair into an icy blonde bob that was reminiscent of her HBO character.
Clarke has gone back to her natural colour since, but she did speak about the process of dying her hair to Vanity Fair, saying the new look only made her more recognisable to fans on the street.
Emma Stone
Emma Stone was actually born blonde, but has been known for her auburn locks throughout her career. She went back to her natural colour in 2011 and 2012, and has rocked several blonde looks on film over the years.
Cara Delevingne
While Cara Delevingne was born blonde as a child, she has gone to bronde and brunette multiple times throughout the years.
In 2017, Delevingne did a root bleach and went platinum blonde, but she relaxed back into a more natural blonde in the years following. She went back to brunette in 2021 but has been rocking a bronde ever since.
Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart may be back to her brunette locks (and even rocking a brown mullet at the Met Gala in 2023), but she’s been blonde many times throughout her career, most recently in 2021.
Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian famously bleached her dark, long locks for the Met Gala, in order to complete her transformation into Marilyn Monroe (while wearing her ‘Happy Birthday, Mr. President’ dress).
Kardashian has spoken openly about the toll this took on her hair, and has since been rocking a brunette shade much closer to her natural colour.
Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus was a brunette as a child, but in her time as Hanna Montanna she often wore a blonde wig. Cyrus must have taken a liking to her time as a blonde, as she has consistently died her hair lighter throughout her career – sometimes blonde, bronde, or even platinum.
She famously had platinum hair during the ‘We Can’t Stop’ era of her life, but more recently has rocked a split blonde-and-brown aesthetic.
