Fundamental to any beauty look, mascara can alter the appearance of eyes, simply by darkening, lengthening, volumising and sculpting your lashes. But due to the ever evolving formulas and wands on offer by beauty brands, the search for the perfect mascara seems to be never-ending.

If you are having trouble finding the right one, famed makeup artist Claudia Soare (aka Norvina) recommends “working with your individual lashes and eye shape”. Soare’s latest venture, formulating under her mother’s eponymous brand Anastasia Beverly Hills (ABH), saw the creation of her personal holy-grail mascara (and ABH’s second mascara ever): Lash Sculpt.

Here, Soare shares some of her tips and tricks for beautiful lashes, and the best new mascaras to buy in 2024.

Foolproof Mascara Formulas

When selecting a mascara, consider the overall beauty look you’re going for. Soare suggests opting for a universal and buildable formula that can cater to multiple lash types.

“With Lash Sculpt you can create natural or bold looks because it’s an all-in-one [mascara, offering] length, volume, separation, and lift,” she says. “It has a smaller, tapered brush to catch every lash and those hard-to-reach inner corners.”

For doll-like drama, try a “volumising formula paired with a larger, hourglass-shaped wand to create full-bodied lashes and high-impact definition.”

Best Mascara Application

“Start by applying mascara at the base of the lashes and stretch towards the lash tip,” explains Soare. “This gives instant length and separation. Use the tapered tip [of the wand] to separate lashes in the inner and outer corners. I build coats until I have the look I’m going for.

Usually one to two coats for a natural look, and when I do a full glam look, I like to layer and build multiple coats for additional volume. I also apply on the bottom lashes because I love the way it accentuates them.”

Avoid clumpiness: Overapplying product and waiting too long between layering coats will result in those dreaded “spider” lashes and flaking. The ideal time between coats is 15 to 30 seconds.

Curl up: Enlist an eyelash curler tool. Apply before mascara for a stronger, lifted lash curl and better mascara performance.

Ingredients For Healthy Eyelashes

Soare suggests prioritising mascaras with “conditioning ingredients [such as biotin, collagen and peptides] for softer, fuller-looking lashes”.

She says, “Biotin supports strong, healthy looking lashes. Collagen helps to create more boosted-looking lashes. And peptides help enhance lash length and fullness.”

For sensitive eyes: Select formulas that have an “ophthalmologist tested” stamp of approval.

“This means that we are testing our products and ensuring they are safe for use on the eye,” explains Soare. “It’s especially important to anyone with sensitive eyes.”
