Last year’s New York Fashion Week was ruled by show-stopping hair and makeup looks, from gothic lips to gold glitter and floral hairstyles. Beauty looks are making an impact again this year, with a new set of trends signalling that the best is yet to come. Despite being only halfway into the week-long event, we’ve already seen endless swatches of neon, vibrant eye makeup and dramatic cat eyes, taking inspiration from 80s punk, abstract art and surrealism.
Take the Christian Siriano show for example, which proved that bold eyeshadow and painted metallics are trendier than ever. Jeremy Scott looked to the 80s for his collection, with the hair and makeup looks emulating rockstars of past decades. Chromat brought in shades of blue and green to create multilayered eye makeup. Kate Spade’s show disrupted the trend with wholesome florals and simple makeup, while Helmut Lang paired neon beauty with a minimalist collection.

Christian Siriano
This pop-art inspired collection from designer Christian Siriano was full of vibrant shades of aqua, mint, fuchsia, silver, navy and marigold. The painted eye looks were set with sparkles and glitter, glossy lips and a paired back face.
Brandon Maxwell
Makeup artist Tom Pecheaux created a laid-back, bronzed and functional beauty look to compliment the beach-inspired runway theme. The models wore a touch of black eyeliner, slight sparkles the eyelids, strong eyebrows and faux freckles.
Kate Spade
Set within your local flower market, Kate Spade’s runway show featured monochromatic beauty looks consisting of rosy cheeks and pink, glossy lips or brushed brows and a sleek winged liner. Lead hairstylist James Pecis worked with the different hair textures of the diverse cast of models, lining the runway with a series of pulled back ponys, loose waves and updos.
Ulla Johnson
Here, the makeup artist played with different shapes and textures to create a diverse collection of eye looks in the same custom shade of pistachio. The rest of the face was kept colourful with pink blush and glossy lips. The beauty look complimented a lively collection full of pattern and colour, drawing inspiration from African designs and artists.
Helmut Lang
Neon eyeshadow was also the feature of the Helmut Lang show, this time in a severe cat eye flick. Dense colour blocks in fluorescent yellow, pink, green and blue lit up in the runway in Lang’s minimalist take on punk culture. The eye lashes were curled with little or no mascara to place all the emphasis on the eyelids.
Chromat
In their 10th anniversary show, Chromat created an empowering collection filled with blue and green neon colours. The vibrant and coordinated eye makeup reimagined looks from past collections to celebrate their anniversary. Make up artist Keri Blair used a range of MAC products to create bold lips, lines and dots.
Jeremy Scott
Scott’s SS20 show was a mash up of metallics, 80s prints, sequined suits and shoulder pads. The beauty look created by makeup artist Kabuki reflected the clothes, consisting of an outrageously wide cate eye, pink lipgloss and shiny cheeks. The 80s aesthetic was alive and well in the hair, as pink, blue, orange and purple wigs made their way down the runway. Hair stylist Eugene Souleiman used an old-school crimping iron to create the cartoonish, textured finish.
Marc Jacobs
Pat McGrath created 61 different makeup looks special to each model at Marc Jacobs’ NYFW show.”Not one girl or boy or person will look the same,” McGrath explained. “Every single one had to be different. It’s really about the characters, everyone being different and having fun.” The lesson learned here: when it comes to beauty, do you. The standout product? Marc Jacobs Beauty See-Quins Glam Glitter Eyeshadow in Pop Rox and Star Dust.

Established in 2009, Fashion Palette is an Australian fashion agency designed to help fashion designers expand their businesses via annual runway platforms by connecting designers with industry professionals. This year at New York Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2020 showings, Makeup artist Alison Jade, who is also the founder and creator of Alison Jade Cosmetics, created a dreamy tonal ochre peach moment. Layers of warm honey-caramel worn on lids, lips, and cheeks that moved away from contouring and a matte lip to finish.
