Adele is notorious for keeping her private life out of the spotlight, and frankly, we love that for her.
But after releasing her latest album 30, Adele gave her fans and followers a new insight into her life behind the camera—including the highest highs and the lowest lows.
In a now-iconic Instagram live event, Adele was asked by a fan what the new album was all about. The gloriously raw and real singer didn’t hesitate before she responded: “Divorce babe, divorce.”
Indeed, Adele hasn’t had the easiest few years as she navigated a separation with her former husband, Simon Konecki, with whom she shares nine-year-old son Angelo with.
But Adele channeled the undeniable grief of her relationship breakdown into something that would serve her for the better—she focussed inward.
Now, Adele has never felt more sure of herself—in an interview with Vogue in October, the Grammy Award winning singer said of the divorce: “I didn’t want to end up like a lot of other people I knew. I wasn’t miserable miserable, but I would have been miserable had I not put myself first.
“Neither of us did anything wrong. Neither of us hurt each other or anything like that. It was just: I want my son to see me really love, and be loved.”
The singer also revealed that in the aftermath of the split, she used exercise as a coping technique.
“It was because of my anxiety. Working out, I would just feel better. It was never about losing weight, it was always about becoming strong and giving myself as much time every day without my phone.”
She added that she would sometimes even work out two or three times a day. The workouts included weights, boxing or a hike. She also did cardio each night
“I was basically unemployed when I was doing it. And I do it with trainers,” she added.
It pays to mention that Adele’s routine is certainly not a one-size fits all. For many people, it’s far too much to expect one workout everyday, let alone three.
And the singer will also be the first to admit that working out isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, previously quipping that she doesn’t exactly “f***ing skip to the gym”.
Below, we unpack Adele’s diet and exercise routine in more detail.
1. She hired a personal trainer
Since splitting from her husband, the songstress became “incredibly dedicated” to regular sessions with a personal trainer each week.
“After Adele started working out, she never looked back,” a source told People. “She was instantly a changed person with a different mindset.”
But it wasn’t easy at first, as the singer had to work hard at keeping up the new lifestyle.
“At first, she was very hesitant about keeping a workout routine,” the insider continued. “It was like she was questioning if she was going to enjoy it enough to stick with it. But she has been incredibly dedicated. She continues to work out with a trainer and she looks fantastic.”
2. A famous follower of the Sirtfood diet
The singer is reportedly a follower of the Sirtfood diet which is designed to activate sirtuins – cells in the body which are believed to regulate inflammation.
According to the BBC, researchers also credit sirtuins for influencing the body’s ability to burn fat and boost metabolism – a combination designed to garner weight loss results.
The diet is split into two phases. To kickstart the plan, followers are advised to restrict calories to 1,000kcal for three days by consuming three Sirtfood-approved green juices and one meal a day. From days four to seven, daily calorie intake is increased to 1,500kcal with two green juices and two meals now on the plan.
The second phase lasts two weeks and is designed to enable people to lose weight in a sustainable and manageable way. Food and drinks included in the meal plans include the likes of green tea, kale, citrus fruits, turmeric and blueberries.
As per any lifestyle changes, it’s important to seek advice from your doctor before embarking upon a weight loss journey.
3. A firm fan of reformer pilates
According to US Weekly, her new workout regime includes 60-minute sessions of cardio, circuit training and reformer pilates.
A weight loss tactic famously adopted by the A-list set with fans including the Duchess of Sussex, Gwyneth Paltrow and Margot Robbie, Adele reportedly attends reformer pilates classes with actress Ayda Field.
A more technical variation of original mat work, the exercise routine involves the use of ropes, springs and a carriage. Designed to provide a full body workout, the routine enables practicers to work everything from their core and posture to muscle tone.
Exercise aside, Adele has undoubtedly grown a lot as a person since her separation—and there are a multitude of things that have helped her do that.
Indeed, the singer’s new relationship with Rich Paul recently went public—and it’s clear he makes her happier than ever.
In a special interview with Oprah Winfrey in November 2021, Adele explained: “He’s just hilarious. Oh, he’s so funny, he’s hilarious, yeah. And very smart. You know, he’s very, very smart. It’s quite incredible watching him do what he does.”
And the best part? Adele said the relationship has only made her more sure of herself.
“It’d be interesting to see what my reaction is like in general to anything that hurts me now that I feel so secure in myself, and I’m talking outside of romance as well.”
This final revelation—more than anything else—is why we’re truly happy for her. Long live Adele.
