"Gender is whatever."

Reese Witherspoon’s daughter, Ava Phillippe, has opened up about her lack of gender preference in a candid discussion about her sexuality.

In a Q&A on her Instagram, Phillippe spoke to her almost-one-million followers, letting them send her questions to answer on Stories. When one follower asked the 22-year-old whether she is attracted to males or females, Phillippe responded quite simply.

“I’m attracted to… people!” she wrote on top of a photo of herself, adding in parentheses, “Gender is whatever.”

Currently, Phillippe is in a relationship with Owen Mahoney, a fellow UC Berkeley student, who she’s been dating since 2019.

Back in November 2021, Witherspoon opened up about the experiences her children face who, unlike her, were raised around fame.

“It’s an odd situation because I didn’t grow up famous. So [Ava is] living an experience that I did not have, and so are my sons,” the actress told InStyle.

“We are lucky enough to have friends who grew up in Hollywood and can help give them advice on how to navigate.”

“Ava is so down-to-earth. She wants to do great things in the world,” Witherspoon told the publication. “She’s studying and learning and trying to find herself. It’s a big thing in life to try different things and figure out what is really your path.”

The eldest child of Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe, she also has a little brother, Deacon Reese Phillippe, and is a half-sibling to another brother, Tennessee James Toth, who Witherspoon shares with current husband, Jim Toth.

Having recently celebrated her 22nd birthday, Witherspoon has embraced her daughter’s seemingly swift growth into adulthood, sharing a sweet birthday tribute to her grown-up daughter on Instagram.

“Happy Birthday to my sweet little girl…excuse me… I mean my adult daughter!!!” she wrote.
