Starring Isreali actress Gal Gadot as the Amazon princess, the first film to focus solely on a female superhero is now the biggest blockbuster ever directed by a woman.

After winning over fans on social media, the film grossed $100.5 million ($135.4 million AUD) in its opening weekend (Friday-Sunday) in the US.

It also made $122.5 million overseas, giving it a massive total of $223 million worldwide over the three day period.

According to Warner Bros, 52% of the audience over the weekend was female and 48% male, affirming, once again, that men will watch female leads.

โ€œIt shows that superhero moves arenโ€™t just about men. Theyโ€™re about women as well,โ€ said Jeff Goldstein, distribution chief for Warner Bros.

โ€œAll the noise about Patty Jenkins breaking the glass ceiling for directors, I think that added to it as well.โ€
