According to the Associated Press, Ivanka even “recruited the American executives in attendance” and “guided the discussion.”
Following the meeting critics were quick to slam Trump, questioning her presence in a meeting between foreign leaders.
“Imagine if Hillary Clinton met with Merkel and Chelsea Clinton was seated next to her for official meeting,” wrote Senior Analyst at Whitman Insight Strategies, Matt McDermott on Twitter. “You can’t. It’s unimaginable.”
With no official role in Donald Trump’s White House administration, other critics were quick to slam her presence and positioning at thee meeting.
Despite the backlash, a senior advisor has revealed Ivanka is set to receive her own office in the West Wing and high-level security clearance, reports Politico.
She will effectively be a full-time staff member, but will not receive a salary, her attorney, Jamie Gorelick has confirmed.
“Having an adult child of the president who is actively engaged in the work of the administration is new ground,” Gorelick said. “Our view is that the conservative approach is for Ivanka to voluntarily comply with the rules that would apply if she were a government employee, even though she is not.”
Ivanka has now issued her own statement addressing the move.
“I will continue to offer my father my candid advice and counsel, as I have for my entire life”, she said in a statement to Politico.
“While there is no modern precedent for an adult child of the president, I will voluntarily follow all of the ethics rules placed on government employees.”
