Spanish wine-making start-up Gik have created a brand new (allegedly delicious) blue wine.
Fans of alcohol and Parks and Recreation will know that ~Blueberry~ Wine has existed for a long time, but this unique new creation is made with grapes like tradish wines, so the flava flav is still totally on point.
Gik created their wine with the help of the University of the Basque Country and Azti Tecnecalia. They make it by using both red and white grapes from vineyards all over Spain.
According to Eater, “The 11.5 percent ABV juice is hued neon blue with anthocyanin (a pigment found in grape skin) and indigo (a dye extracted from the Isatis tinctoria plant), and a non-caloric sweetener is added as well.”
The 750ml bottle retails for €10, or $15 AUD, and it’s categorized as a “chilled, sweet white wine.”
ATM the drop is only available in Spain, however the company have plans to launch sales in France, the UK, the Netherlands and Germany this year. After that, they’re even thinking of expanding to the U.S.
The product was supposedly made with social-media lovin’ millennials in mind. Because if it’s not on Inatagram, it didn’t happen.
It might be some time until us Aussie’s can glam up our feed the blue vino, so for now we will just admire from afar.
Despite their viral goals, the company keeps things real when talking about their “process.”
“We were raised in a country with a strong wine culture,” co-founder Aritz López explained to Eater, “but wine has always been a beverage put on a pedestal. So we thought about how it would be to have real people making wine for real people, not a wine made by experts to pseudo-connoisseurs.”
“We do not believe in wine tasting rules and we don’t think that anybody should need to study the bible of enology to enjoy a glass of wine. That is why we made an anti-technical sheet.”
The site also recommends pairing the drink with sushi, smoked salmon or (our favourite option) “nachos and guacamole.”
Now these are our kinds of people!
