Check mate, I do, whatever you want to call it—Anya Taylor-Joy has found her forever person in musician Malcolm McRae.
The pair officially married in a romantic Venetian wedding in October 2023, according to the Daily Mail. Their nuptials follow rumours of a secret wedding in June 2022, shortly before they flew out from the United States to Australia, Page Six reports.

March 2019: A breakup
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Anya Taylor-Joy opened up about a devastating break-up she went through shortly before she filmed Emma in 2019.
“It had challenged everything. I was just incredibly insecure and very, very unsafe in my own skin. The whole of 2019 was me becoming a woman, essentially.”
It seems Taylor-Joy channeled that energy into her burgeoning career—in 2020, she became the breakout Netflix star of the year when award-winning series The Queens Gambit was released.
April 2021: “A partner”
While no names were mentioned at the time, Taylor-Joy appeared to first reference her relationship with Malcolm McRae back in April 2021 during an interview with ELLE US.
She didn’t say much other than reference how her “partner” had just returned from work.
“My partner’s just come back from work, and he’s moving around all of his equipment, so this was the safe spot,” she told journalist Melissa Giannini.
May 2021: The public kiss
A month later, Taylor-Joy and Malcolm’s romance was all but confirmed when they were pictured kissing while walking around NYC. The rather cute images, obtained by Page Six, can be viewed here.
July 2021: Roomies
According to an insider, Taylor-Joy and McRae had all but moved in together just a few months after their relationship went public.
“They are inseparable and spend all of their time together. Malcolm is practically living with her at her home in L.A. now, and they spend every night together.” the source told The Sun at the time.
July 2021: The hard launch
That same month, McRae shared his first post of Taylor-Joy to Instagram along with the caption: “I’m besotted.”
In October, McRae shared another picture of Taylor-Joy, this time, he was in the snap holding hands with the actor.
“Oof supremely happy, ” he wrote.
March 2022: Red carpet debut
About a year into their relationship, Taylor-Joy was ready to go red carpet official with her partner. She took him along as her plus one to the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty.
Taylor-Joy looked stunning in a sheer black Dior gown, while McRae looked, well, “besotted” to be with his partner (understandably so).
March 2022: Her “hobby”
In an interview with British Vogue, Taylor-Joy shared a rare comment about McRae.
“I said to my partner the other day that he was my hobby,” she told the publication.
“I see reading as something that I have to do. He loved it because he’s the same. I’ve finally found someone who will happily sit in silence with me reading. We’re basically 80 years old and seven at the same time and it works really well.”
She also revealed that she had been long distance with McRae, and that it could be “hard” at times.
“But it’s also kind of great because when you’re together you’re really valuing the time that you have. Everyday mundane activities are so full of joy. I love going to the petrol station with him and filling up the car and going to get breakfast.”
April 2022: Red carpet PDA
In April, Taylor-Joy took McRae as her plus one to the premiere of her new film, The Northman. At one point, the pair shared a sweet kiss on the red carpet.
June 2022: Engagement rumours
In June, Taylor-Joy and McRae were spotted in Sydney together with the Queens Gambit star sporting a stunning green engagement ring. In the images, obtained by The Daily Mail, Taylor-Joy freely flashed the sparkler to onlookers.
“She bounded off the plane and then seemed to flash the ring at her driver before getting in the car. She was either showing off the ring or doing a dance move. Either way, she looked ecstatic,” an onlooker explained.
July 2022: A rumoured secret wedding
Reports surface about the pair having secretly married in June, shortly before they left for Australia.
According to Page Six, they had an “intimate courthouse wedding”, before Taylor-Joy flew back to the set of upcoming film, Furiosa in Australia.
October 2023: A Venetian wedding
In October 2023, it was confirmed that Taylor-Joy and her partner McRae had officially tied the knot. The 27-year-old actress married McRae in Venice, Italy.
The photos were obtained by the Daily Mail, which showed Taylor-Joy looking resplendent in a taupe ballgown-style dress emblazoned with delicate embellishments and a hummingbird motif.
According to reports, the pair said their ‘I dos’ at the Palazzo Pisani Moretta, a famed palace on the Grand Canal, created in Venetian Gothic style.
In the photos, Taylor-Joy was snapped standing at the Juliette balcony earlier in the day, hair still-damp in her bridal robes, nursing a cup of what we can only assume is tea. Later, she was pictured at the same balcony with her hair in a half-up, half down style, with a long veil secured to her half-pony. Tendrils of her platinum locks hung lose at the front of the hairstyle, while the remaining hair cascaded in loose waves down her back.
Her floor length dress was embellished all the way to the floor, while McRae was pictured hopping off a canal boat with a suit bag and Dior bag. Peak the photos here.
A slew of Hollywood celebrities were pictured attending the romantic affair, including Miles Teller and his wife Keleigh Sperry, Julia Garner, Cara Delevingne, Nicholas Hoult and Evan Ross.
The day following the wedding, guests People reports that the newlyweds held a brunch at the St Regis, which is also located along the grand canal.
April 2024: Two Year Wedding Anniversary
In April 2024, Taylor-Joy took to Instagram to celebrate her two-year wedding anniversary with her husband.
In the Instagram post, Taylor-Joy shared a series of never before seen pictures and videos of the big day with a caption that read, “two years ago, on April Fools, I secretly married my best friend in New Orleans. The magic of that day is ingrained in every cell of my being, forever. Happy second ( first ) anniversary my love…you’re the coolest. N.B yes, those are anatomically correct heart cakes. Yes, I am the vampire Lestat.”
The star also confirmed that her wedding dress was Dior.
