The Amalfi Coast may seem a far-off fantasy right now, but on Tuesday afternoon Aje offered up the next best thing: a stylish sojourn for resort 2022. The Calyx at Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden was transformed into a Mediterranean oasis, complete with fragrant lemon trees, an eye-popping citrus runway, and all the elements we’ve come to expect from the Australian label: vivid colours, striking silhouettes and plenty of girlish charm.
A tiered yellow maxidress opened the show – to a collective sigh from the audience – followed by a melange of sorbet shades from tangerine to raspberry, lime and limencello, tempered by chic neutrals. Aje’s signature puff sleeves met bold ruffles and cheeky cut-outs, while sweet minidresses were dressed up with dramatic bows or sprinkled with hand-beaded daisies. In a new direction for the brand, there was cool-girl suiting and relaxed two-piece sets, rendered in highlighter hues and overblown florals.
“I loved the prints – something fresh and new for the brand,” said marie claire fashion director Naomi Smith. “And there was great diversity in the models cast.”
Those models, including Shimma, Sabah Koj and Jasmine O’Neill, strode the circular catwalk in braided sandals, Aje x Superga sneakers and shapely raffia hats – accessories sure to become fixtures in our summer 2021/22 wardrobes. Now to plan a dreamy holiday.
