5 Items That Defined Noughties Fashion

Plus, the trends we're revisiting now

There’s no denying fashion’s recent fixation with the ’90s. From The Row to ‘Old Celine’, many of the past decade’s biggest fashion moments were shaped by the minimalist design aesthetic that defined the 1990s.

But as we head into a new decade, it seems fashion and design is segueing into a new era of fashion nostalgia: the Noughties.

From cool-girl flip phones to teeny-tiny bags, here are the Noughties trends making a stylish comeback.

Juicy Couture Tracksuits

Back in the early 2000s, celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez made a case for the two-piece velour and terry-cloth tracksuit. Worn in candy colours and often paired with oversized, ombre-lensed sunglasses (another Noughties trend worth noting), the ultra-comfy, Cali-style pieces were the it-girl uniform in an era that predated celebrity stylists.

Thanks to COVID-19 lockdowns and fashion’s new-found obsession with loungewear, this year has seen a Juicy revival, with Kim Kardashian West releasing her own iteration of the velour tracksuit for her fashion brand Skims. Referencing the iconic suit’s heyday, Kardashian West partnered with former BFF Paris Hilton to front the campaign. Wearing their Skims tracksuits, Kardashian West and Hilton recreated many of the circa-2000s paparazzi shots that saw them in matching Juicy Couture tracksuits.

Flip Phones

The coolest tech trend of the early 2000s belongs to the flip phone. Ask any millennial and they’ll admit to pining over images of celebrities and their chic ‘snap’ phones. And now, thanks to Samsung, the beloved Noughties trend is set to make a comeback.

Created for multipurpose use, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G is stylish, compact and portable with a super-sleek design in four colourways (Mirror Purple gets our vote for an authentic The O.C. throwback).

Of course, it wouldn’t be a 2020 version without cutting-edge tech: with 5G capabilities to allow for lightning-fast speed, enhanced graphics rendering and a flex mode that allows you to view videos and browse or text at the same time, the palm-sized Galaxy Z Flip is packed with high-tech features to make life easier.

And the best bit? Its all-day battery life runs circles around the model you had in high school.

Micro Bags

In the early 2000s, before Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen influenced the slouchy, oversized tote, one of the biggest accessories was the micro bag. Worn tucked under the arm and covered in flashy branding, the little it-bag was a luxury must-have.

Thanks to Instagram influencers and models (see Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid), the micro bag has enjoyed a comeback over the last few years, with fashion houses releasing updated designs of their most iconic 2000s originals. It’s true what they say: fashion is cyclical.

Cowboy Boots

Remember when whatever Sienna Miller wore was officially on-trend and you had to own it, like right now? Boho belts, dresses over jeans, waistcoats.

And in 2004… cowboy boots. In true Noughties style, the actress wore them with distressed denim mini skirts and handkerchief tops, or floaty boho dresses.

Surprisingly, the trend has enjoyed a comeback of late, with emerging brands reimagining the cowboy boot in crayon-bright colourways and eye-grabbing metallics. The trick to giving the look a modern feel? Avoid pairing boots with pieces harbouring Western connotations and opt for sleek and structured clothes instead.

Trucker Hats

Like many of the Noughties’ biggest trends, the trucker hat rose to popularity after it was seen on Paris Hilton. Both Hilton and her Simple Life co-star, Nicole Richie, were early adopters of the trend, showing particular affinity to those made by American apparel brand Von Dutch.

In 2003, celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears were rarely spotted without a Von Dutch hat, forking out a cool $100 plus for the logo-branded caps. The trucker-chic aesthetic eventually gave way to a bling-ier branded look (we’ll blame Ed Hardy) before eventually fading out.

It wasn’t until Kylie Jenner shared an Instagram post wearing a Von Dutch cap in 2016 that the brand experienced a brief revival. The takeaway? We’re ok to wait another decade before revisiting this fashion trend.
